Anybody get any good deals lately?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

That should make for a very interesting whiskey then. Ive got two of their barrels, one is better built than the other, but both have produced good spirits on their 2nd and 3rd fills.

Yeah, I bet a good beer would leave as much flavor as it takes.
I'd really like to fill it with rum though.

With beer's low barrel entry proof, wouldn't there be a lot of goodies left in the barrel just primed for a 130-proof newmake? I bet a single malt scotch would love it in there.

I think a good whiskey should go first if it was charred. I think the beer is going to take mostly "oak". almost like water would but impart some more sweetness to the wood from the unfermented sugars. If the barrel was intended to be a wine barrel, and not charred, it would probably be great for a rum. Not knowing the barrels history, whether it previously held whiskey before beer, Id just peek inside and decide between a rum and a whiskey.

Well... seeing as how I have yet to perfect my rum hogo, whiskey is likely what's going in it.

I have 2 other Badmo barrels...
What I'd really like to do is have a Solera aging set up for rum so I have a continuous supply of something yummy.

I just read an article about the dangers of drinking that scared the crap out of me.

I picked up some of these from Etsy to check out. They leak when you set the jar sideways. I guess they’ll let a wide mouth mason jar breathe in any case. I tried beeswax but it still leaked a bit. Might need to swell up a little. Still better than the regular lids for upright storage.

My sister saw that someone posted they had some empty liquor bottles in her town. My wife was up there and made contact, set up to p/u about 10 for $20. The lady asked what we were doing with them, and my wife told her we do some home brew and winemaking. She said, well I have more in the basement if you want more. Ended up with about 50 liquor bottles for $25. And the filling has begun... (except for the mash that turned to vinegar bc I let it sit too long. It finished while I had covid, and I immediately followed that with a terrible upper respiratory infection. I'm still not 100% )

Anyone looking for used bourbon barrels, and in MO, there's a guy near Jeff City that has fresh dumps, $75 each for full size, plus heads and staves at $5. HMU, or check him out on FB marketplace. They are mostly in a storage unit, or truck, he will give an address when you want to go look at them and take your pick.

How fresh? I heard that you can put a gallon or two of water in a fresh'ish barrel, rotate it for a week or so then drain it and run it through a coffee filter or something and get likker!

I haven't made the hour and a half trip yet, planning on going for a couple soon. He said you can still hear the whiskey sloshing around in some of them.

I'd get a couple of those and throw in a gallon of water and give it a try! Let us know :)

Staves and heads from one barrel will probably be enough to last "forever"...

Sounds fabulous! My wife mentioned picking it up Sunday! A barrel is my reward for weight loss goals. She gets new tattoos, I said I want whiskey barrels! I'm about 20-25 pounds from total goal, and I'm 5 pounds shy of being half of what I was 3 years ago, so it has definitely been a well earned journey!
I'm aching for a lifetime supply of a good Single Malt Scotch style, aged beautifully right here in the Midwest... a hail to my ancestors and my good taste!? I'll soon be starting a cellar build, hopefully, so if it seems to be taking on too much oak in our climate changes, Ill move it to some cellar temp storage, or at least for some time.

I traded 3 engraved flasks for a whiskey barrel today. I got it all broken down, and ended up with 27 staves and the two barrel heads.

Nice. I'm in this for $7.50 and 15 minutes on my laser engraver. Hell of a trade if you ask me. I don't think I'll need oak for a long time either. I've now got 30 staves, two heads, and a half a grocery sack of weathered oak. I think that's about a lifetime supply lol.

I did that many, many years ago. Draw a pie with 12 pieces on the end, put in 8 1.75L of boiling water and turn it one pie every two days. When you’re done drain through a filter or cloth. I had some work, some were like weird cobwebs floating in it. Comes out about 20-25%abv.
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

I thought I'd tell y'all about my recent good deal...well sort of...

I don't know that I'd exactly call it a great deal but I got a fair deal on an old cast iron chicken fryer
fryer 2 - C.JPG
Many years ago we got rid of all our vintage cast iron and only kept one Wagner chicken fryer without the top. On my weekends I like to cook huge breakfasts and this pan is the only thing I can actually cook has browns in  but it has a wobbly bottom and as already mentioned, no top. These haven't been a huge problem but recently this double fryer with the trivet came up at an auction and we decided it could be time to replace the old one.

The total price was actually around what the trivet alone can sell for.
fryer 4 - C.JPG
Once we got it I thought the seasoning on it was questionable. You could see someone did a half assed job of cleaning it before re-seasoning it so I decided to strip 70 years of build up off and start over.

It took way too many hours with a scraper and sandblaster but eventually I got it stripped to my satisfaction
fryer 3 - C.JPG
fryer 6 - C.JPG
fryer 5 - C.JPG
Then began re-seasoning. Now it's ready to serve for another 70 years.
fryer 8 - C.JPG
I'm sure it won't take long to get it properly re-seasoned.

Nice looking pan Cranky

Picked these up the other day, fella had them advertised at $40au each or 200 for the five.
Intended for storing oilve oil, full stainless and made in Italy, each holds 20L.
Retail here in Au is around the $225 each mark.
https://theolivecentre.com/product/20l- ... k-with-tap
Two rubber O rings on each need to be replace with a more ethanol appropriate material/ gasket.
Reckon they will be perfect for small batch pre oaking and storage.
In their last life they were used to make "cold pressed coffee"

Nice score, Bill. The advantages of stainless over glass storage are huge.

The other day I got a text from someone moving to the other side of the country asking if I wanted his table saw. I'm hard on power tools and seldom pass up a good deal so said "Of course I do". So yesterday I went out to his place and picked up this old but really nice Delta table saw

He also threw in a Harbor freight sliding compound miter saw

Both of them for FREE

Years ago the shop teacher at our school retired, years later he died and I bought his Grizzly Cabinet Table Saw for $300 dollars from his wife. Use it all the time.
