Anybody get any good deals lately?

Yea. Turns out the boss wants to downsize his setup from running 60L boiler to 20L. (I know right, downsize distilling?!) So I said don’t throw anything away, give it to me and I’ll sort out the rubbish. Haha. So could be a few more good things heading my way.

So... :problem: ...I just had a long and serious discussion with Mrs Cranky about our personal life plans that we are hoping to accomplish over the next couple years and how they are going to effect just how much distilling I'm going to be able to accomplish in that time

This resulted in us deciding it's probably not a great time for me to be playing with 900-3600 lbs of sorghum flakes which will be selling in a couple hours.

So, I'm hoping someone local in the PNW can get a deal on these pallets tonight because I won't be buying them.

I knew all along that I don't have time to deal with all those sorghum flakes. Mrs Cranky actually kind of tried to talk me into going ahead and buying them but I just won't have time or space for it but it's killing me to see 900 lbs pallets of them sell for $30-$40 a pallet and not to me  I think that's something like 3-5 cents a lbs

The Wingman Brewers auction is now up
https://cyberauctions.com/Lots.php?cid= ... 49&srid=49

I'd like to get a keg or two but I really don't need 16 in one lot...or even 6 for that matter. I might try to buy them and sell off what I don't need or maybe buy the one full of glitter  . You PNW guys might have a look, maybe you need a 1,000 gallon fermentor

The other thing is Elhi's end of month consignment sale.
https://cyberauctions.com/Lots.php?cid= ... cord=160#_
I'm pretty sure some of the Wingman stuff wound up here as well. I just finished the tedious process of going through the whole thing looking for things I might want. It's a crazy amount of stuff so I thought I would help out by listing the things I find interesting.

I find lots 1751 through 1754, interesting, they are 900# pallets of sorghum flakes. I think this is a bulk breakfast cereal. I started a thread on that here viewtopic.php?t=92817

lot 4114 is a "Volatile acidity cash still" which looks like a small lab still, which I think would be cool just to have.

4624 is 21 boxes of candy canes, which could be a source of cheap sugar...I wonder if the peppermint would carry over :problem:

Lot 5989 it 2 one gallon jugs

5990 through 5995 are carboys...I can't help myself when I see cheap carboys but I'm going to try to pass these up. Hopefully someone here can get a seal on these.

5996 is mixing tools

6004 is 96 twelve oz and 12 twenty four oz beer bottles.

6005 is 2 three gallon carboys

6010 is a Blichmann beer gun

6012 is a bottle drying rack

6013 is a bottle capper

6014 is various brewing supplies

6017 through 6024 seam to be brewing related.

I was awful and didn't share the lot numbers of the bottles or corks I'm hoping to get but if I do get them I will be offering the excess to people here.
I missed this post, and missed out on the 3 gallon carboys. I've been wanting one of those. The kegs at wingman could be a good deal if you can spin off the ones you don't need.
I need a keg like I need a hole in my head, but it'd be fun to build out a keg boiler, even if I don't "need" it.

I watched most things close and some of the carboys sold higher than new ones. There were 2 sets of 3 gallon carboys, one listed them as 3 gallon the other as 11.3 liter. The 3 gallons sold high but the 11.3 liters sold at a good price. I guess people can't do math.

The wingman kegs are starting to get up there. I'm thinking maybe the one full of glitter will go cheap. My mailbox got broken into again so if I get it I might have to turn my mailbox into an epic glitter cannon for the mail thiefs.

I’ve noticed that a lot of Americans are vehemently opposed to anything metric, and flatly refuse to even attempt to use or understand it. I remember many years ago, Alabama had some highway signs that listed distances in both miles and kilometers, but they had to remove them after getting so many complaints that they were eyesores. I saw the signs. They were literally no different than any other sign, aside from having the word kilometer on them.

To be fair, I’ve noticed that many people in the rest of the world have a similar opinion of “freedom units.” I think the whole argument is a bit silly. Just use whatever works for the situation at hand. If you learn both, you can snag some good deals on stuff that nobody else understands!

Maybe I was lucky …. Maybe not …. But I my first term at school ( New Zealand circa 1970) they gave us rulers with inches . They gave us weights in ounces . I remember clear as a bell measuring and weighing stuff even at age 5 .
Went back to school next term and they suddenly gave us these centremeter rulers and gram weight things . LOL , I do remember thinking how neat it was …. All those 10s , 100s 1000s

That played on my my mind for many years …… they teach you one thing ….. then they change the rules .

Well took me a while to get over that , but in
hind sight , kinda pleased I experienced lived in both worlds .

Then I joined this forum and realised our Down under gallons aren’t the same as US gal . …….I can cope

Not mention the cups and teaspoons

We used metric measurements to build things. Converts them to imperial for the pilot gauges. (Sigh).…..

Now everything at NASA is metric.

It's funny, when bidding on the auction you are already on the internet, all it takes is simply opening another window and typing "liters to gallons" or vice versa and you know what it is.

Another funny thing is when it comes to buying used gallon jugs. Sometimes I find some where the neck flares out then narrows and I know that even though it says "gallon" it;s an imperial gallon.

Well, I'm a bit upset :problem: I wasn't paying attention and missed the Wingman auction :( A lot of things went too high for my budget but the glitter keg sold for only $20 and I was hoping to get that

On a better note at an online estate auction I got these two carboys for $20
carboys and corks 2 - C.JPG
It's going to take a bit of effort to get all the corks out but they are nice 5 gallon Crisa carboys and I just can't [ass up a bargain carboy

and this oak box for a dollar
OAK BOX #1- C.JPG
It's the perfect size for gifting someone two bottles of brandy
oak BOX #2 - C.jpg
although I kind of have plans to put my old, but new to me, saw and planer to work and make some fancy gift boxes for that but that sort of thing takes time and this didn't.

Then, Mrs Cranky has been needing a new food processor and this sale happened to have a brand new Brevel 16 cup food processor being sold in a lot with several other small appliances. It was at $66 and she was going to give up but I told her to keep bidding since I got the carboys so cheap. She did and got it for $77 for the lot which I think isn't bad for a $450 food processor but as it also turned out the lot had a $130 air fryer, a $160 deep fryer and a $160 Cuisinart "multicooker" (crock pot) all brand new, so I think this lot probably counts as a good deal too  ...oh...there is also a $20 electric citrus juicer, which actually might benefit Mrs Cranky because her arthritis is getting too bad for her to use the old fashion hand one we have.

I saw this 18 gallon still for $99 including freight.

I'm tempted to get it just for the pot and throw away the rest of the junk.

I'm rebuilding my brewery in order to brew 20l+ batches and to make post brew clean up a bit less grief. Wanted to find a stainless pot that would fit into my 30l keg as a mash pipe. Sadly the guy in front of me in the scrap yard walked off with what looked like the perfect size but I got a slightly smaller one for 6 euros. It's the pot from a 10l pressure cooker. If I'd found the lid I'd have considered keeping it but as it is I'll cut out the bottom and replace it with an old Ikea sieve that's a perfect fit.

Maybe filling the carboy with water and with some assist from something like a small pick they'll line up and float out. And keep adding water as you go... (?)

While I was having a quick look on marketplace for kegs, after commenting on the "UK kegs" thread, I spotted a listing for 75L screw top HDPE containers.
As luck would have it, they were located right by a friend of mine, so I asked him to drop by and if they were clean inside, get them for me.
He was visiting near me today so just dropped them at my place.
They are great, and at £5 each an absolute steal.
Perfect diameter for my heating blankets as well, so I now have fermenters to match my soon to be new boiler!

Yeah I'm super happy with them.
I really hope the capacity is to the shoulder though. I'll do a measured fill test when I get chance to clean them out.

I wanted a small keg to take homebrew to a party.

Found these 5 liter stainless kegs for $6.50 each with tax and shipping at the wal_mart website. I got a six pack at that price, it's cheaper than glass jars for storing all kinds of things.

Thank you! I just ordered some as well. I’ve been wanting to cut back on glass storage vessels, but hadn’t found a decent price.

Did you actually receive kegs? The description mentions scented candles. I’ve encountered similar listings on Amazon, stahlwhile wrench sets at really low prices, and only received a 14mm wrench. The seller was using the same ad for single wrenches and full sets and just changing the price.
