I used to run gas on my column. I was limited to the amount of fuel available to complete runs and always felt like the rig was safer to operate when outdoors, which posed its own limitations. Open flames and high abv alcohol were too risky. However, the cost of natural gas makes it a cost efficient alternative.

I now run electric in my pot still. It does cycle on and off because my controller is just basically a thermostat/rheostat switch. At first this was aggravating. After a while I figured out that it doesn't make a difference if it cycles, it still produces a good product in a timely and safe manner. Electric is quieter and safe to operate in the house without fear of fire or combustible gases. The constant provision of electricity as fuel is the best benefit. In all likelyhood I will probably stick with electric. And, if I ever build a micro distillery, then I will outfit it with Solar PV to offset some of the heating costs.
