In the US we have a "pesky" Constitution!
Lawmakers need to find ways to tax people just enough so they don't complain AND that people think someone else is paying it.
Not everyone make spirits so if you tax the makers then the drinkers don't see the tax...at least not directly.
By law a direct tax by the Feds be apportioned among the states on the basis of population, so these indirect taxes can get divided up among less than 50% of the population and the "non" taxed folks think that they are not taxed and they like that and vote for politicians that keep doing it!
edge.

Beer and wine require little proprietary knowledge...get grape juice or grain juice and wait...you get wine and beer.
Stillin was a black art developed by monks in monasteries and the laws and taxes are there to keep or force the secrecy. The monks and monasteries were of course equal in power to the emperor of the era. Today's monasteries are known as corporations; monks as lobbyists; and the emperor is known as president.
The Internet reveals most secrets and there is much gnashing of teeth from the keepers and profiteers of secrets.

But stillin ain't that hard! A quick lesson in Chemistry reveals that water boils at 212 and alcohol at ~173 degrees. Heat it to somewhere in between = booze vapors!by Ayay » Fri May 18, 2012 5:20 am

I have always found it amusing that the temperance movement caught hold so strongly, enough so that the US Constitution got changed. How dare the righteous try to stop workers from drinking in the afternoon to drown their sorrows from their crappy jobs (this is the reason we all get into this hobby anyways)!

For a really good explanation of how it happened read Last Call by Daniel Okrent. I found it to be a very enjoyable history of prohibition with lots of back stories and interesting characters I'd never heard of before.MountainWilliam Bill wrote:I have always found it amusing that the temperance movement caught hold so strongly, enough so that the US Constitution got changed. Our government is supposed to be after safety like most people think or maybe they just can’t afford to lose revenues if home distilling becomes legal. At the end of the day we all pray that things turn around eventually. ![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

Re: WHAT SINGLES OUT DISTILLED SPIRITS?
Man, I really can't see the argument for the gov't restricting distilling because of potential tax losses. As I said before, I don't foresee a lot of people going out and starting to distill enough at home to make a huge dent in the amount consumed overall, paralleling the home brewing of beer's course of legalization (that it has not negatively affected commercial beer sales). The excise taxes on booze have been a smaller and smaller percentage of the total federal revenue year after year since about 1950 on. I think distilling has a MUCH better chance of being legalized sooner over marijuana, but how to start the national conversation and legalization process is unclear. But I do know ~12,000 members here are receptive to the idea!

You make a very good point man, hoping these lawmakers get knocked on the head soon. Just archaic and unreasonable laws!

Re: WHAT SINGLES OUT DISTILLED SPIRITS?
Seems like the power to control others because of religious/morality reasons is the main reason it's been singled out. Ironically, i don't think it's greed that is responsible for outlawing it, it think greed may be the only reason it ever gets legalized. Like pot, the lure of easy tax money may be the reason we eventually get "a champion" in the polical arena. The pot folks are making headway because politicians can see a way to get lots of tax dollars, cut down on costly prison populations, and slow down the crimes committed by drug cartels. Money eventually wins out over religious/moral extremism.
Someone far smarter than me once said that the original sin was the desire to control others.

Back when I used to quit on a regular basis, I would always quit from Carlton's. Those things are so awful that they just leave an insanely horrible last taste in my mouth. And they don't have much nicotine in them, so I'd have to chain five of them back to back just so my hands would stop shaking. Then the stink and the taste was impossible to scrub away, and I could walk away a little easier.confederatecondenser wrote:Talking about them dang Marlboro's. Thats a bull I gotta get off of. Bravo!
Unfortunately, if you knew how to order Ramback from D&R, that unbelievably delicious blend would suck you right back in. It sure is a good thing you don't know anything about googling D&R tobacco and have no idea what Ramback is. Sure is a good thing for you.

Legal stillers are allowed to deliver govt-sanctioned crap. Some legal stillers deliver nectar and they charge for it, but in the main you are buyin over-taxed bootleg shine.

Follow the money:
For £10 I can make: 1) 35 pints of 6%/9% beer in 2 weeks 2) 39 bottles of 16% wine in 5 weeks or 3) 6 litres of 40% vodka in one week.
Even I am not convinced by this argument. When did distilling become legal in NZ and exactly how many distillers have gone broke since then?
This is gang warfare. Leah Betts died from water toxicity. Her grieving father gave permission for 2 advertising agencies to use her name and image as anti drug propaganda. Sorted! The 2 agencies involved had as clients booze makers. Double sorted!
