i just took the disk part out of the mason jar top, put on a coffee filter, and screwed the ring back down on top of the filter.

Most bottled whisky does change slightly in flavour, exposure to varying temps and light alter it slightly and if you assume that all commercial bottles are airtight and will stay airtight (especially the older ones) think again.
