I'd be shocked that no one has recommended fores and heads...

I recently got a used olive oil tank, same drill, used fores and a paper towel...then heads, actually smells good now. Will boil some water in it next.

Have you considered just boiling it out with soap and water, start half way full boil keep slowly adding water and bringing it to a boil until its just to the top. Just a thought. Melloman

Companies that recondition these barrels for other uses, choose a caustic soda to clean them. Remember these people get barrels that were used to store all kinds of things.

The consumer may then use whatever light detergent is at hand to wash away the residual soda stink.
