Re: boiler~plates~packed
Thanks tap, sorry for the confusion, havnt showed much detail as there's not much interest in plated stills here. Your right, as it is now, the plated section will permanently run and can send vapors to the packed section via valve. This is just a mock up to do some testing before I finish it all. I want to run the columns separate but I also want to play with them at the same time. I want to try loading the plated column in full.reflux and then send some vapors to the packed section to see what I get, I'm hoping I may be able to take hearts while.leaving heads in the plated section and tails in the boiler, big ask but it's something I want to try. Plus I want to try different flavors from one run, stronger flavors through the plates and weaker through the packed, by just shutting one column down and feeding vapors to the other with the same wash. I was going to do a pressure relief but I'm just to worried something might fail, even with 2 pressure relief valves they could both fail, highly unlikely but I don't want to risk it!, so, I've been thinking of putting a small dephlegmator on the boiler out put for the plated section, and a valve on the packed section line (like on the pic). Then I can turn the small dephlegmator on and it will stop vapors going to the plated section and open the valve to operate the packed section, and close the valve to the packed section then disable the dephlegmator to to run the plated section. Make sense?
. Thanks tokoroa!.

I like that mini deflag idea. A lot safer then two valves.

You got a heck of a rig going there Googe! Hey, don't think there's no interest in plates just because not as many build them. I'm not really a flute guy but I am fascinated by the different builds and what you guys can come up with. I even have a single plate under my column. Maybe one day I will adventure further. Meanwhile I will read about others and try to learn more.

Re: boiler~plates~packed
Thanks.fellas
. Did a sacrificial run on both columns, ran great. I loaded the plated column and let equalize for 15 mins or so, then opened the valve to the packed section very slowly, the bottom.plate on the plated section started loosing depth, so bumped the heat up a tinny bit, then started opening the valve more, it held a.good bath depth the entire.run. If I open the valve to the packed section past 3/8 it collapses the plate, but with the valve open that much it's.more than enough to run the packed section!. I'm not good at identifying fractions in neutral washes, never have been!, but what I tasted from the packed section was sweet, smooth and no burn, which indicates hearts to me. I had no packing in, so that's why it was a bit sweet tasting. So, by the looks of it, I've been able to hold fores and a good amount of heads in the plated section while taking hearts through the packed section, something I was hoping would work. im doing a rum run tomorrow, so will be able to define fractions better. So, as jarhead pointed out, it's a cm/vm/cm/lm
the lm is the PC collection point, like all others except I use a slant plate, so.it's sort of a lm lol. . I can control the plates section with cm, as well as with the vm to the packed section. I can control the packed section with cm, as well as vm. Try say that three times fast
.

Thanks bigswede, I'll do a video and try explain. Thanks AC, now that I've done it, it really is quite simple to have the columns separate, just getting the plated to flow.into the packed is going to be the next hard bit. Good luck with yours!!.

looking foreward to hear how your rum run went ( if you've gotten to it).

Re: boiler~plates~packed
Rum run went great tap, very tasty!. One thing I've noticed is having the small vapor input line to the column is that it runs so much better than how it did with the column sitting on the boiler!. The bottom plate was stable and a very active happy looking plate through the entire run. Tails didn't raise there head till around just under 90%. Compression must have been good. I also notice I needed less power to run it, I run gas so don't have volt stats but I ran the flame less than I do with the column on the boiler. Also I used bugger all gas, I had one bottle pretty much empty and thought I'd use it for heat up then switch over to the full tank, the almost empty tank lasted the entire run, was really amazed!. This is by far the best still.I've done, and I've still got so much experimenting to do!. Anyone with height issues would be able to do this very easily!,

Looking great! I'll be very interested in watching a video if you do make one. My skills haven't progressed into the column side of stilling yet. So like Swede said I'm also not too sure what I'm looking at.

right on Googe.
Now that you've got the rum run under your belt, how did your plans of holding heads and fores on the plates while pulling hearts through the column go?
Have you packed the column yet?

Re: boiler~plates~packed
Thanks fellas, I think I've confused a few with my ramblings!. It's basically getting a plated still with a packed section on top, cut it in half, bolt each half to a table, and run vapor lines to each column from the boiler. Simple as that. It's just that I've discovered I can run it different ways is why im confusing a few. I didn't try the heads retain thing this time tap, needed rum to drink and didn't want to mess the run up if it didn't work properly. Will do some.more runs soon and some.testing. I havnt tried it packed yet.

Nice rig! Mine is similar, but has to be clamped together and is hard to change on the fly. Hmmm.

Slick, googe, very innovative. You've broken new ground here by separating the columns. Its very thought provoking, from the engineering perspective too.
Question...what was the takeoff purity? How about the taste coming off? It would seem a way to up the purity while maintaing flavor. I like that notion.
Great job & thanks for sharing with us.
