I found a quart of 29% h2o2 on eBay for $13 my fuzzy math figures .5 cup per gallon makes 1% , got some soaking now hope it works. Thanks for the information

I'm failing to see where the drug store peroxide has anything other than Distilled Water as the "other ingredients"... it's printed on the label. Hell, ingredients less than 1 ppm get printed on these labels if they are there...I recently soaked a 5 gal bucket of corn in the 3% drug store variety diluted to 1% with distilled water. Soaked it 24 hours then spread it out on a tabletop and covered with a plastic tarp.. sprayed a mist on it once per day for 6 days.. acrospires were 2 1/2 inches....germinated beautifully. Hardest part was drying what was now 2 buckets full of germinated corn.

That would be about 19.2 ounces dumped into 5 gallons.UrToopid wrote:I recently soaked a 5 gal bucket of corn in the 3% drug store variety diluted to 1% with distilled water.

No need to get fancy, I use tap.
Works just fine.

Not sure exactly, but it was 25 lbs whole corn, (3) 16 oz bottles of 3% hydrogen peroxide, and (6) 16 oz bottles of distilled water. At 5 days I had good 1 1/2 inch acrospires, with no signs of mold. At 6 days, the acrospires were 2 1/2 inches, but I had minute amounts of "spiderweb" mold starting. This rinsed off easily with water, but I'm thinking 5 days would have been just right.

Re: My First.....Malting of Corn (or......"Corn Porn")
There are a couple things I'm still trying to sort out about corn malt.
Two of the things that happen because of the malting process is that enzymes are developed, and the starches in the corn start to break down, reducing the need to cook the corn before mashing.
Both of these things are affected by how long you let the malting go, how long the acrospire is allowed to grow.
It has been my impression that the enzymes are developed early and in good numbers, but the starch breakdown takes longer.
I've tried to test my own corn malt for DP and found that if I cook the malt first I get way better conversion than if I don't. I've let the sprouts go to almost an inch, so maybe the starches would become more available if I let them go farther.
I think corn malt has a much higher DP than it gets credit for, but the conversions are low because of the starches still being locked up in the corn even when malted.
One of these days I'm going to get back to doing some experiments with sprout length and how it affects the availability of the starches in the malt.

Ha, would love to but I've been out of town lately, far away from my malting shed.greggn wrote:Tomorrow ?
The other problem is that my attention span comes in waves. I've tried to do this experimenting a few times but by the time I get all the corn malted and dried I have trouble staying focused and organized enough to follow through with the testing.
I have learned a few things from my trials though, I think.
I should have another window of time coming up in a few weeks and maybe can try to make another run at it then.
The idea is to malt to several sprout lengths and then compare the conversion rates and try to estimate DP. I'm going to start drying at about 3/4" and go about as long as 2", in stages of maybe 1/2".
At 1/2" to 3/4" I think I have found that the starches are not really broken down enough for the enzymes to do their work completely without also cooking the malt.

Late to the party, but I thought I'd chime in. I just did 6 pounds of corn, 8 hrs soak, 8 hrs drain covered with a wet towel. Do this cycle 4 times. (So far, the extra rinsing hasn't effected my growth rate). Then cover with a wet towel and stir every 8 hrs or so from the edges of tray (more of a lifting and flipping motion of the corn mass, like turning pancakes). Spray with water if needed. I got 1-2 inch growth in 72 hrs after final soak. 80% germination.
I dry mine and shuck the roots a bit differently, but it works for me.
Not sure of the rules for posting links, but I did a 2 part YouTube video series of the process. If anyone is interested https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8fBsFxcoCs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Instead of hydroponic shops, chemical supply houses have it for much cheaper 60%. If your state is a bit controlling have a business card made up for a hydroponic nursery. I was able to buy all my acids and chems using a business card I had printed up for a few bucks. Saved me on taxes also.
