Rum's I like.. and dislike

So I am dipping my toe into rum. So far I have tried Ron Zacapa 23, Diplomatico Exclusive, and Appleton Reserve.
I think the diplimatico is my favorite of those. The appleton is downright nasty. So here is my question. Is the appleton from the dunder pit process? If that is typical and what I should expect then I wont be doing a muck pit.
