Appreciate the encouragement.Beerbrewer wrote:I've been brewing about 19 years, it gets a lot easier after the first 10
I joined a brewers' club and already it's making a difference, plus what I'm picking up here I suspect another year and I'll be making a great beer.
Next up, using maltodextrin to give some body and head retention to these shallow beers with dissipating heads.
Sucking on a Scottish Ale right now and it has no "bottom" and minimal head, but a nice maltiness.

My first attempt at kegging didn't go so well. It was pretty flat, no fizz, no head. It tasted great and I would brew another batch of the same stuff. I need to read up and see what I did wrong.
I don't drink alcohol, I drink distilled spirits.
Therefore I'm not a alcoholic, I'm spiritual.

Hi,
My brother-in-law, my son and I plan to make some bourbon (my son's aim).
We will probably get a Braumeister 50 l beer-making system. His cousin uses that to make the 'beer' for his whiskey.

6 Row Joe [/quote] I need to try my boroscope through the airlock hole. Star San first of course! LOL
I never thought of that! If only we can get it to pull a sample to test FG!

Set and forget is a pretty fool proof method, but it takes awhile. Set it to 11 PSI for 10 days and then try it. The rocking on my knees/legs have given me mixed results (over or under carbed) I usually put it on gas @ 40PSI for 24hrs and then back it down to 11PSI for 3-5 more days and it is all good.6 Row Joe wrote:My first attempt at kegging didn't go so well. I put it on gas @20# for 24 hrs. and then to 5#. Not enough co2 I would say. Could you prime it like you were to bottle it and then keg it then just use 5# of co2 for delivery? Just thinking out of the box here.Wolfairious wrote:Set and forget is a pretty fool proof method, but it takes awhile. Set it to 11 PSI for 10 days and then try it. 20# will take more like 5 days. I have found that 30# while I rock it back and forth for 15 minutes, then an overnight rest, will get me there. But rocking a keg for fifteen minutes feels like a long time. Alternately, set it at 10#, and a few weeks later things will also suffice.
I got one of those float-on-the-top pickups, and it works really well also. Gas carbonates from the top down, so it makes set-it-and-forget-it quite fast.

Waiting a week or more to start drinking from my kegs just feels longer to me, so I'll rock away to a good ol' rockabilly song...maybe some Waylon!bilgriss wrote: But rocking a keg for fifteen minutes feels like a long time.

I have seen people prime with sugar in the keg. Of course that would take a lot longer to carb. I think you would need to keep your serving pressure at the same pressure as you want it carbonated to though. I like 11psi for the temp I serve at for my IPA's. You may be serving a stout at a different temperature, so your setting will be different. But 5# seems low.
