I can play several instruments mechanically, and without artistry or feelin': piano, harmonica, bagpipes, lap dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, and mandolin.

If I play a song on any of those folks will recognise the song, but not get into it. I have no soul on those. Real musicians hear me and laugh AT me.

I was brought up on a super wide variety of music. My favorites as a kid tended to be funny, really good with their instruments, and a bit manic: the Marx bros, Spike Jones, Spike Mulligan, Frank Zappa, etc. The only two instruments I could "let loose" with to the point where real musicians didn't laugh AT me, but with me, were totally non-traditional, dirt cheap, and fit in a shirt pocket. The kazoo and the nose flute.

The kazoo is alot more fun than ya think, and I have an ebony one that I can play like a trombone. The nose flute is real fun for anyone with a good ear and good pitch. I find it's fun to break out to back up AM Country and Classic Rock broadcasts on car trips in the boonies. When out here we get far enough in the boonies that the ONLY radio is AM God Radio, or Navaho language broadcasts, my friends get a kick outta my renditions of 1920's through 1950's Jazz Standards. LOL.

You're a lucky man, puma. Turn her on to the CD Dave Grusin did a few years back. I can send you more info when I get home, if you like. Major points...

Guitar, fiddle, piano, drums...all much better when I'm into my corn extract..at least I think!

Mostly guitar and fiddle though, along with singing.
