Just loaded the still with the stripping run #4 of sweet feed. That was Gen 4 sour mash and the feints from Gen 3 stripping run. Gonna try and run My first spirit run right after this today. We'll see how it goes. Wish me luck.

I ran this recipe through my still night before last and everything worked great. I ended up with about 5 quarts ranging from 80 proof after the foreshots, up to 130 proof in the middle and stopping at 60 proof on the end. The middle of the run was crystal clear and very tasty. I really recommend this recipe for any first timers since it is cheap, easy, and produces fairly decent results. After running this, many of the things discussed in this forum will make complete sense.

One question I had was how much of the wash do you put in the boiler? Once the fermentation was complete there were basically three layers. The top layer was mostly clear with a few grains floating on top; the second layer that resembles extremely soggy bread; and the third layer on th bottom that was a thick sludge of grains. I only used the clear part on the top. I'm not sure what to do with the rest. It smells terrible and looks even worse.

Squirrels and opossums love the stuff!

You can pull off the clear stuff .... then in another container pull off all the liquid you can and let it settle... then run it or save it for the next batch...

The grain you can add more sweet feed to it and sugar and re use it UJ style... for a second bump on what grains you have and the new stuff your adding.. plus if you don't get the temps over the yeasts limits you can reuse the yeast bed ...

I brought home a bag of Nutrena Country Companion 10%, and now I see it has some preservatives in it :/

Any way I can still use this?

The small amount of preservatives present should not hurt anything. Your adding it to a lot of water comparatively. If it didn't have preservatives, you'd probably be pissed that it was moldy.

Do you think rinsing it prior to cooking would be helpful or just a waste or water?

Waste of water and flavor... Don't worry about the small amount of preservatives... We've had this discussion many times...

Yea, rinsing it would rinse away the molasses. This adds a lot of character.

Does anyone check PH on continuous runs on a regular basis? I am on Gen 5 of using 50% backset on every run except the original one of course and my PH was 4.3...little on the low side...but not horrible.

Brought bag form tractor supply all grain sweet feed. Love the stuff made second batch on the 22, bubbling away.batch size used 23 lb sweet feed, 22 lb sugar inverted and 14 gal water. Covered with clear wrap and rubber bands. the smell was great. After fermentation will let clear for at least a week before running in pot still.

Ran my 18L of 50% from my stripping runs yesterday.

The ferment was very clean.. hard to smell heads today... due to allergies but looks like very little heads. Will do cuts after my nose clears out. But off the still was only about 2 - 3 jars of heads before thinks went clean. I did take close to 1l of Foreshot in full reflux before going to pot on the boka and collecting the head/hearts tails.

Was interesting. Hearts could be drank right off the still. In the later hearts is a jar that smelt and tasted like rum. Looks like I have a pretty good haul. Should be close to 2g or more (Might make close to 3g out of the run... time and cuts will tell)

Will see what happens. Got about 35g ferment almost ready to run also. That means 3 strips and then another spirit run like this.

Did cuts on my batch got just under 2g of really nice mild whiskey at 65%

Samples some white and its even nice white. This was not even a hearts jar was after I did the whole mix.

I normally age with oak but I have some sugar maple so might give that a try this time. Other option are some whisky bottle staves... decisions decisions.

There's a feed and seed store right down the street from me but they do not carry "sweet feed" however, they do carry the ingredients to make it... oats, barley, corn and dried molasses.

I was going to combine these three grains with the dry molasses. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestion as to the proportions. I'm guessing equal thirds for the grains but to how much dry molasses?

Also, since I have access to dry molasses, can't I use that instead of white sugar?

Most 30% 30% 30% and 10% molasses by wait. I would not use the dried molasses. Get feed molasses not the dried stuff.

Is it a bag of molasses? If it is this crap at the feed store, don't use it! I tried it and it is some rancid crap!

Ask for wet cob.

All of the sweet feeds in our area have nasty preservatives in them so I had to make my own batch up. After 60 days of aging on used oak chips it came out very smoth with perfect color. Our yield with the molasses was awesome

Nice haul how many gallons of wash to get that 7 1/2g of whisky?
Is that cut to 40% or at 62.5% for aging still?
For your cuts how much you end up recycling for heads and tails? My last run I kept about 50% Got 2G of 62.5% aging and 2g of fients about the same. I used in my all feints run with another 3g. All together was about 5g of 40%.

I only got about 2G of 65% from my first run. I stripped my second run and got about 5g of 62% to run when I get a chance with about 4g of wash left to add to the 5g of 60% and a little water as needed to get under 40% for the spirit run. I will get more with this run as last run was only 47% but same volume. So 2+g incoming and started gen 3 already too. Think that will be it for sweet feed for me for a bit once done.. then all thats left is to wait and taste along the way.

In general I find so far sweet feed to be milder thank ujssm (with a little rye in it) But I found the UJSSM more interesting with later generations so will see what happens with this as it goes maybe do a 4th gen and add 5-10 lbs of milled rye to the mix. heck maybe start that and add to the existing batch. I LOVE RYE.

My ferments are about 35-40 G each go. All cut down this will definitely keep me going for a while.

Ran my second Gen of this he other day. Looks like about 3g of 62.5% will do final cuts later the week but pretty sure f my cut points and its only 47% of the total about were I normally am for most my cuts. Really wish had a 5g barrel to put both batches in to age. Be nice to see what happens in a year.

Gen 3 about 1 week out from being ready to run and that will be it for SF for me.

Sf has become my drink of choice just because of the different grains and molly. I for the longest time had used producers pride 12% sf from ts and as much as I liked it I did upgrade to a non pellet sf. Can't think of the name right this second but it's all grains, very beautiful stuff. Not quite the amount of molly but still makes a very fine drink, and here just recently I decided to make a sf rum ferment.
This is for a 20 gal wash
10-12 lb sf of choice
20-25lb inverted sugar
1/2 gl molasses
1/2 cup bakers yeast

Not necessary but I do a starter with rehydrated yeast
2 quart 90-95° h20 1/8 cup sugar, stir in yeast and set aside for however long you need to complete the rest of the steps

Put sf in fermenter, then invert sugar. Set aside or pour in
Bring to near boil 3-4gl h20 and molasses stirring often until well mixed.
Put all into the fermenter and top off with h20 to make 20 gl.
I use a drill with a paint mixer to airate for a few minutes and then stir in the yeast starter. I use a brute 30 gal fermenter for this one and the lid is pretty loose. During some months I put a towel on the top the place on the lid. Damn pesky bugs!
This should ferment dry within 5-7 days with proper temp control.
I do not let it settle very long as the yeast play a big part of my particular flavor profile I like.
Do as you will
I also run in a 2" keg potstill with thumper to worm rig. Just my thing, but should make a fine drink.
Should anyone try this out please post back to this thread and post results.
Note that this is a bold flavor drink, very smooth with the right blending and cuts.
There's always room for improvement and you can always adjust the ingredients to suit your own personal taste.
BUT!!! Try this one out before just in case you like it as much as I do.

Not the one called "sweet feed 12%" that is loaded ith alfalfa pellets but the purple paper bag that just reads "all grain". Seems to be as rare as hen's teeth these days. I have some washes I need to run that I used Mana Pro from Walmart. This was actually the original recipe if you go back to the first couple of posts in the thread.

Tsc in town has some,so I guess I got lucky! I'm going to try it out. Temperature here has been in the mid 80's f here and will be for the next week or better so it's time.

I have used the pp sf 12% for a long time and have made a very fine drink with it, although it looks like shredded wheat once mixed up. But still is good to use and had not 1 problem with it. Less than 10$ for 50 lb so when I first started out with sf that the one I chose. Now the one I get is 18$ 50 lb not quite the molly taste I like so that's why I started adding it to my liking. I've tried with and without the addition of molly and both are great. I know the lot of members say to avoid pellets in the sf but producers pride 12% is good imo. The best part of the all grain sf is you can add backset and sugar and do multiple generation unlike the 12% which so cheap I just started with new every time since it just looked so bad. It may had not been but I didn't do it.

Well,tsc hadn't updated their website and when I got there they were out...damnit.
Instead I want over to the feed mill,they have a horse and mule feed that is only cracked corn and rolled oats with 9.5% molasses.
I grabbed a bag as it looked and smelled like a sweet granola bar. I'll keep y'all up to date

Lucky man, you're probably better off with the local stuff.

I finally found a feed mill in my state, and it turns out that they closed down in July.

I wasn't a fan of the product Blue Seal Pacer, which is the only thing I could find locally. I'm going to end up rolling my own, I guess.

Bubbling away! Unfortunately I didn't get an Og due to both hydrometers broken but I should be OK just from checking my notes on o.g./s.g.
50# sugar to 40gallon water.
Ordered two new hydrometers yesterday.
