Stripped my second batch of hbb. Didn't smell as good as the first batch. For awhile, I was worried I burned it, but it didn't taste burned.

Hopefully it will turn out well for the spirit run.

durty_dunderpants wrote:is there a reason you only go 10"? for me it was just all i have so far! are you capping or just running 1:1 reflux?
I only use 10" of packing because I can only fit 10" of packing in my column without adding the extension. Sometimes I add my sight glass and put a half roll of mesh in the middle of it, just so I have something to watch, so that helps a little too. With mesh 10" of height is the equivalent of 2 extra plates i believe. Maybe I'm only Squeezing heads with what I have and I need more packing to Compress them ;-)

I'm capping, for all intents and purposes. When I'm done squeezing heads I simply turn off flow to the reflux condenser (0 reflux) but I don't remove the coil to add a full cap on the column. It's kind of capped on top with what I call a paddle that holds the coil and I can pot still without much vapor leaking. Not enough to worry me. Otis

Finished my 4th stripping run yesterday. So, today is the spirit run. Got about 13 gallons of low wines (80% corn, 12.5% barley malt, 7.5% rye) heating up.

just finished Odin's RyeBread SugarHead...hit the gravity right at 10% but the temp was at least 110 when I took my reading. I don't have a second large fermenter so it had to be split between a glass carboy and primary plastic bucket. 11.5 gallons between the two. I need to find out what that translates to in actual ABV.

Also, I'm a bit surprised. I don't know that I have ever seen the airlock start bubbling within 30 minutes. It's already going at a rate of a bubble every 4 seconds. I can't tell what the other bucket is doing because its open top covered with paper towels in between bacon screens, but I assume it has also started.

around three litres of Birdwatcher's low wines, I have around 12ltrs all together now so I may take nine and do my spirit run, only concern is not having enough jars to put it all in, nice problem to have though.

I just got 8 gallons of brown ale from a brewer friend to run through the 'ol booze pipe. Should make some decent wiskey I think. Anyone have much experience stripping carbonated beer? I read it should be good and flat before its ran.

While I was at it i used 20 gallons of my sugar wash hot backset to get a new barrel of cooked corn, oats and wheat to Alpha Amalaze temp. Long day today and gonna be a long one tomorrow. :|

mashing in my first deathwish wheatgerm, modified somewhat-
6 lbs DME
1lb Lyle's black treacle
64 oz peach mango 100% juice
5 lbs homemade invert (make 10 lbs batches once a week for my liquor needs, so)
adding 1lb caramel 60L in the last 30 min of the wheatgerm boil

I started my first ever peated whiskey today.

* 42% Peated Malt Barley
* 58% "CBW Bavarian Wheat" Liquid Malt Extract (65% malted wheat, 35% malted barley)

31 gallons, OG 10 60 Pitched last night and it's been bubbling all day long.

What wonderful smells. :-)

Spirit run, first one yet with a bunch of SF low wines and some that didn't oak well. I'm shocked at the amount of product from 13 gallons at 40%.
Been at this since 10am, still collecting all mid 70s, and it's 7pm, although my proofing hydrometer has been verified at 2% over at 95%, and it showed 46% at 43

Had a half a barrel of sour mash that was ready 6 weeks ago that I never finished running sitting outdoors, so I opened the barrel and saw a good lacto infection going and decided to run it. The proof has dropped from evaporation I guess. Last run of this she started at 160 proof, this run was 130.

Around 105 proof I tasted her and it has a very interesting flavor, nutty with an oaky hint. Gonna strip it down and add it to my all grain low wines. Should be an intetesting second run.

Ran a feints run, stopped collecting after I started smelling tails, I've already recycled my feints once already so didn't want to chance wasting time and effort for a third run.
