Re: The MixMaster
Although it looks like a refined cold finger, you said it is not a condenser. Does it house a temperature probe so you can monitor your coolant temperature?

Re: The MixMaster
I am not guessing as my brain is over worked this morning but I will say BigSwede you missed your calling as you should be making these as professional stills and I think you would make a decent living at it. Especially after MileHi posted how many stills they sell I was blown away by the number.

Re: The MixMaster
BS, that is an absolutely beautiful rig. Is there a means to know where your slide is at any one time??
The item in question looks like it may be the start of a pressure controls type thing to ensure correct water flow to each condenser.?

Re: The MixMaster
I think my mind just exploded...
My guess is that its some sort of flow meter for your cooling water.
Nice to see you make progress on this beauty. Now hurry up and make some likker!! Its been a long time coming.

Re: The MixMaster
Hint #2... this should give it away. Picture this thing connected to the lower port of my baby shotgun reflux condenser...
Think about the water flow.
Think about the water flow.
No... but if turned to fully closed, I'll know where it is by the number of turns in the other direction. Klunky, but short of some major add-on, and a lot of work, that's how it's going to go. Once into a VM mode, it'll be run by output volume and vapor temp.Is there a means to know where your slide is at any one time??

Re: The MixMaster
ahhhh, stops the def from ever draining completely?????????? The height of the inner tube is the water level maintained in the def with no water flow???????
I dont friggin know........ I know I want/need one though regardless.

Re: The MixMaster
You win! Not the rig, but how about 1.2 liters of 6.2mm SPP, if you want it. PM me your mailing address.bellybuster wrote:ahhhh, stops the def from ever draining completely?????????? The height of the inner tube is the water level maintained in the def with no water flow???????

Here's the thought - might be full of s--t on this - but I've got a 2" shotgun reflux condenser. If I simply have a hose in at the top for cold input water, it's basically going to drain out the lower exit opening, maybe wetting the tubes 10%, unless I have the water on full blast, which isn't proper.
So... with this widget, water goes in at the top. At the bottom, it exits the condenser, enters the larger tube, and begins to rise next to the smaller tube, along with the water level inside the condenser. The two will have identical water heights. Eventually, the water height reaches the top of the small, inner tube, and drains down.
This guarantees the condenser remains full, and the cold water goes in at the top, where it belongs.
The same thing could be accomplished by simply routing the exit tube (at the bottom) upwards to some location ABOVE the top of the condenser, then back down, but this would take a hefty 180 degree turn, require 3 tubes and 2 ea. 90 degree elbows, or a single 180 degree fitting. Didn't like either of those options.
One other thing about tri-clamps and modular setups... you can angle stuff. Same deal with unions. Love the flexibility in layout.
This has taken me a year on and off... never mentioned it before, but I've been running an incredibly cheesy pot still rig I made years ago, so I'm not a total cherry where distillation goes. But it goes to show, and new users here on HD, take note - you can spend a year, easily, studying and learning, and still not scratch the surface of this art. As this rig was built, I tried to incorporate new thoughts. I could have knocked out a basic reflux still in 2 weeks, but this has been a LOT more fun!

Re: The MixMaster
yay, generous offer BigSwede but I need nothing from you my man. The pleasure of watching this work of art come together is enough.
You my man have answered the question in another thread about science or art...... the answer is both.
Cant wait to hear about its maiden run.
Be proud BS, that is the epitome of form and function. many will drool over it I'm sure.

Re: The MixMaster
It is yours if you want it. It's good stuff, but came from an earlier mandrel, and I like to produce "matching" SPP. Think about it. I like to give back a bit where I can to this incredible community, I've learned so much. TY for the kind words.

Re: The MixMaster
But the question is....have you run it yet?
It looks like some kind of a trophy. But with the design and your building skills, I really want to hear how it runs. Don't keep us in suspense Big Swede.

Beautiful work, this is the kind of forward thinking that everyone should be inspired by. YHM your ideas gave birth to other ideas and that is awesome as well. Ill be looking forward to learning from you fellas. Im in the cant wait to hear how it functions boat.
Re: The MixMaster
I LOVE you wtf device!!!
What a great & elegant way to address the 'filling from above' issue!
Consider this idea stolen.
Curious... won't there still be air trapped above the exit port creating a pressure buildup in the condenser? Or is there a bleed off so we here above?
