Although it looks like a refined cold finger, you said it is not a condenser. Does it house a temperature probe so you can monitor your coolant temperature?

I am not guessing as my brain is over worked this morning but I will say BigSwede you missed your calling as you should be making these as professional stills and I think you would make a decent living at it. Especially after MileHi posted how many stills they sell I was blown away by the number.

No... but if turned to fully closed, I'll know where it is by the number of turns in the other direction. Klunky, but short of some major add-on, and a lot of work, that's how it's going to go. Once into a VM mode, it'll be run by output volume and vapor temp.

Here's the thought - might be full of s--t on this - but I've got a 2" shotgun reflux condenser. If I simply have a hose in at the top for cold input water, it's basically going to drain out the lower exit opening, maybe wetting the tubes 10%, unless I have the water on full blast, which isn't proper.

So... with this widget, water goes in at the top. At the bottom, it exits the condenser, enters the larger tube, and begins to rise next to the smaller tube, along with the water level inside the condenser. The two will have identical water heights. Eventually, the water height reaches the top of the small, inner tube, and drains down.

This guarantees the condenser remains full, and the cold water goes in at the top, where it belongs.

The same thing could be accomplished by simply routing the exit tube (at the bottom) upwards to some location ABOVE the top of the condenser, then back down, but this would take a hefty 180 degree turn, require 3 tubes and 2 ea. 90 degree elbows, or a single 180 degree fitting. Didn't like either of those options.

One other thing about tri-clamps and modular setups... you can angle stuff. Same deal with unions. Love the flexibility in layout.

This has taken me a year on and off... never mentioned it before, but I've been running an incredibly cheesy pot still rig I made years ago, so I'm not a total cherry where distillation goes. But it goes to show, and new users here on HD, take note - you can spend a year, easily, studying and learning, and still not scratch the surface of this art. As this rig was built, I tried to incorporate new thoughts. I could have knocked out a basic reflux still in 2 weeks, but this has been a LOT more fun!

Curious... won't there still be air trapped above the exit port creating a pressure buildup in the condenser? Or is there a bleed off so we here above?
