I used to live in MN. Damn cold place to be. I recall one winter running pipe on a tank farm. -27 was the high for 30 consecutive days. We (my fitter and I) made a list of welders and fitters that came and went that winter. As I recall it was around 30 or so guys. That was almost 20 years ago and I still have issues from frost bite.

On one occasion a storm moved in on us and they shut down the project. We hit a bar and probably had one to many to make our window out of there. Temps were -30s with a windchill of -60. The little truck I was in was no way prepared for the drifts and we spent most of the night off the road. Eventually another idiot passed by and probably saved our lives. Yeah, the that's one cold place. Only second to ND. Damn desolate frigid state there in the winter.

I remember once It was -30ish and I blew the clutch in my truck. A day or two later we had a heat wave and it warmed up to 0 with no wind so my brother and I were able to change the clutch outside in his driveway in t-shirts without jackets and didn't feel cold. It's been a long time since I've lived there and I sure don't miss that cold.

About the same here moose, -17C at the moment and dropping a bunch more tonight. But who cares, the hawks will be on the tube at 6:30 and I rarely see the bottom of my whiskey glass.

Dry cold bites, a story related to by my Granddad yrs ago about his family coming by ship from Hamilton Ontario to sth Australia makes this point. They left towards the end of winter, start of spring in what had been a darn cold winter (around 1923 or 4) and traveled to his grandfathers farm in Stirling in the Adelaide hills arriving just as the seasons was getting cold there. Now the Adelaide hills get some snow from time to time and dern cold wind but the winter average temp would be dozens of degrees warmer. Granddad reckoned if ya rugged up back home you were kinda warm but when he got to Stirling he never felt so cold in his life as the cold drives right though ya clothes, He reckoned if that ship was still in dock when he got to his granddads place he would have rush back and caught it home. I have kind of found this true to where I live in the central highlands and where i was raised (and am at atm) in SA. When its hot its very hot (upto say 55'c/130f') but dry so almost tolerable, in winter it gets down to say -7c or so at night but dry and feels much colder. In the day time it would rarely get below 10c' but it is unbarable at that where as the same temp in the Highlands is not so bad

When I was posted to Petawawa (in Ontario) it would go down to -40 all the time but with winter warfare gear on it was fine, you could still work outside. Here in NS it's (most winters) -10 to +10 and you're soaked to the bone the minute you step outside. IT IS %^$#@#%^&^ING MISERABLE HERE!!! I would rather have a dry -40 where the snow is dry and crunchy or even fluffy than -5 and slush/rain/sleet/freezing rain. The snowblower plugs up trying to blow slush, a shovel full weighs a ton, the scoop is too heavy to push so you end up slipping and falling on your face driving your knuckles which are still holding the scoop handle, down into the slush so your fingers are soaked and frozen....plowing makes the water/slush fly, grabbing and freezing to everything so the bottom of the truck or 4 wheeler is a solid block of ice and impossible to work on, especially because you're laying in a slushy snowbank trying to chip away the ice so you can get at the grease nipples.....but I'm not bitter...

Gimme 3ft of fluffy snow over 2" of slush any day!

Where I am, the month of December had 23 or so overcast days... I'd rather have cold and sun, than 34 degrees, cloudy and drizzle. Damn that crap is depressing.

I agree, dry cold is better any day. Damp cold gets in and chills you to the bone! Just gotta dress for it. If you aren't military, Canada Goose has some warm stuff...they make parkas for the coldest climates in the world. don't need that extreme, but they also make some that work well for northern Ontario temps. My ice-rider gear works great as well. Layering is important. Overlapping. And keeping dry. Just gotta keep at a moderate pace when working out in that cold so you don't sweat.

Goingbroke: my BIL spent some time stationed in petawawa. Moved around a bit. Some time over-seas. Now in Ottawa.

Only thing I really don't like about this cold, it's no good to run my propane fired still. Otherwise it doesn't stop me from anything else. Even -40C without the wind chill doesn't keep me cooped up.

Global warming is a myth

There was the global cooling scare in the 70s and 80s. When that didn't pan out they went to global warming and climate change. Its all bunk.

Bunk seems such a pedestrian word, it's more...ummm...BULLSHIT! Same as the carbon credit scam, if anybody wants I'll reveal some research I did. Talk about a scam with the sole purpose of (1) making a former presidential wannabe massive money and (2) to set up a welfare state system between the richer western countries and the poorer parts of the world.(Africa in particular)


EDIT: I should mention that yes the earth is slowly heating, it has been since the end of the mini ice age in 1850. However "manmade" global warming is the bullshit they still haven't proven beyond "well of course it does, don't be so stupid" and follow that up with "look the earth was this temp and now it's that temp, see, proof of manmade global warming"

My plum trees started blooming yesterday I'm actually not happy about it because there is still a chance we can get a freeze over the next 6 weeks. At least you guys getting the cold know your fruit trees are in hibernation and when they do wake up they will produce fruit. As it stands now there is a real chance my plums may not produce at all this year.

I had the same problem with plums and peaches. THey are both finicky by me. Lost both plum trees and 1 peach tree. Often the peach blossoms will get smacked by a cold snap and I get nothing. But man when the peaches happen, there is NOTHING like a tree ripenened peach that makes you toss your shirt in the laundry after you bite into it.

Many of the peach trees require less than 750 chill hours. That is 4.5 weeks. You think they have reached that already Jimbo? If it warms beyond that many hours they will begin to bud out.

haha I think we hit that by November. Problem is the damn cold up here. Too many negative degree days and the peaches make nothing, then when they do blossom a May cold snap and done. This aint Georgia where them peaches is happy. Nothin like a georgia peach eh Woods.
