Home Distiller

Has anyone ever used pure sugar cane juice. I've read a few books on home distillation and it mentions molasses mainly. But occasionally sugar cane. Would you need to add water to your wash? It also mentions a clearing agent and a defoaming agent. The old timers who mentioned making it way back when never mentioned these things. Basically add yeast.. Wait.. strain..And distill. Any input would be helpful. -thanks
