You can consider me from GA too Woods, at least in spirit. Ya I grew up in Detroit, LA and Chicago. But Im sick fed up with most these fornicators up here. Never met so many nice people in one place as when we head south. Wifey and I lookin to head south soon, 1 more kid to get into college first. You can call me a damn northern transplant or whatever, thats fine, as least we'll be gone from this here God forsaken state. And Ill bring some a that Cherry Pantydropper over you and Joyce enjoyed so much.

If you were here now you would be simmering as you were building your shed! I had rather be really warm for a couple of weeks than in snow for weeks at the time. With the strong military presence here we have folks like you come down and find they like it and retire here. You would fit in fine and be welcomed. Cant grow cherry trees down here though, not enough frost days.

Thats ok, too many frost days up here to grow peaches reliably. My peach trees died from the constant -20F last winter. Frankly, I like peaches more than cherries anyway. We'll make the adjustment just fine...

PS: I like your avatar. Is that a little tike woods being taught to appreciate whats really important in life?

Thanks for the avatar mention. I found it appealing when I first saw it. It was painted by a friend of mines mother who just passed and was on display at her visitation. I got a rather odd look while photoing it from a guy in the crowd but I looked straight back at him like I didnt give a shit. It is a nice photo and your interpretation is one of many that could be written. Actually thought of TB when I saw it LOL!

Nice bump on this thread Flatwoods! Looks like we have a fair bit of competition.

I have been pondering the reasons why there is a large population of shiners in your neck of the woods verses my neck of the woods and this is the conclusion that I have drawn;
Where you live it has been an old school, cultural, right of passage, handed down through families. Which I am pretty jealous of. How do you beat sittin down with grandpa as he is working the still. Makes stillin second nature.

Our neck of the woods, things are pretty liberal. The police, both county and state, don't really care, and would prefer if you share. With the understanding that the feds are just looking for their money. Our information on distillation has to come through research, not family(bummer). In fact I had never even tasted shine until right before I started distilling.

I think both areas have a large amount of agriculture to work with, which means cheap, delicious ways to make our favorite drop.
In the northwest, there is so much beer and wine making going on, that there are three different brew suppliers within 20 minutes of where I live. They keep all of the supplies for distilling too and usually a pretty stainless steel reflux still, sitting right on the counter. Right beside their distillers malt, amylase enzyme, hydrometers and yeast. Makes it hard not to brew up a batch.
At any rate, the more of us there are, the better the chance of us legalizing this hobby.

Cheers brother!
There is no such thing as a stupid question....... Unless you didn't research it first.

Red I would like to tell you that you hit the nail on the head as far as heritage passed down but I cannot honestly do so. Prohibition made a big hit here on this side of the muddy river and while it may have been practiced it was certainly a hushed subject. There was those that brewed , those that knew, those that bought, those that got paid, those that sought, those that fought, those that got caught, those that didnt and those that died in persuit in practice of the craft. From my reading on HD there are very few here that have had the benefit of hand-me-down knowledge and skill. Most members here are as those there and are self taught. Most have inly heard the stories and talk of folklore of such things. The craft ran down both sides of my family and my dad was storied of haven gotten drunk on grandads beer at a very young age. Grandma was not very pleased. Women and children were mostly seen and not heard back then and a man's business was just that. Daddy couldnt even make decent wine. Dads side of the family drank hard, worked hard and died young, all under 55. Moms side werent wealthy enough to be the producers but were some of the still hands and certainly the consumers. Ruination of many a family who grew up harder than they should have due to the depravity. Only several generations from Ireland, most drank what they could get.
Anyway, family secrets often stayed that way and those that did know and could often didnt pass it down. We all know our past but nit all know the intricacies. Maybe a good thing. I am sure what is taught herein has got to be better than the way it was way back when.
Just my perspective.

Woods, you have poetic way about you that is cool as hell. I might put you to work writing words for some our songs!

Thanks Jimbo. As i have never made whiskey or distilled anything before, the craft of written prose is all i feel i have to offer at times. Never tried to write a song lyric. Essays, poetry, and creative writing sure, but no song lyrics.

Backwoodz you had to dig deep to find this thread! No one has been around for a while although there are several more of us here than have signed on. There is an ongoing debate as to who has more recurring newbies GA or the PNW. Thanks for the shout out.
