Racking cane

Post by olddog »

I made my racking cane from a length of copper pipe and a couple of fittings and a brass shower head. The shower head is about an inch thick, so it can rack off without sucking dead yeast or spent grain as the perforated inlet always remains higher than the base of the wash or grain in the wash.

darn nice work olddog, might try to make myself up one of those... I stupidly tried to use my cane on hot backset. it melted. FYI - cane + heat, doesn't work

I've been using vice grips to keep my cane suspended above the lees. I just cracked one earlier - a little too tight

I soldered a piece of copper strip to the top of the racking cane that just clips onto the top of the fermenter, that way I never suck out the crap from the bottom.

You can also fit a pump to it to aerate your wash too.

I made something similar from some copper, smaller diameter like 1/4"OD, just a bit I had left over. I put a nice shine on it :D I'll post a link to the picture. :eugeek:

@ OD

Seems like u must have a generous opening in the top of your fermenting vessel.

I'd have a heck of a time driving that shower head down thru the top of a carboy!

Yes they are 35lt fermenters from a brewshop, you can see them in the background of this shot.
