Keg welding question

Post by boxcar »

I recently had a welder cut out two holes in my keg/boiler and weld in some threaded fittings for my heating elements. He said I should "clean out the mess from the welds" before I use the still. I've scrubbed it with a modified brush through the holes with soap, but cant see inside the keg to tell how clean it is.

Is there anything the welder used to weld the fittings in that could make me ill/sick?

Rinse with water.

Do a water and viniger run.

Then a typical cleaning run with some wash or cheap wine.

Then rinse your boiler again and you should be pretty well covered.

Or not.
Trample the injured and hurdle the dead.

Phosphoric acid (about 20-30% strength) will clean up stainless welds nicely. Leave it on overnight or even 24 hours, then rinse off well. It does not run, kinda sticks to the surface, even if it is vertical.

EDIT: Make sure you take proper safety precautions when using phos acid. Wear safety glasses and gloves, and if any gets on your skin wash it off straight away.
Be safe.
Be discreet.
And have fun.
