Run has yeast taste?

Hi all

Another Greenhorn here I'm afraid who bought an Airstill, wish I found this site before I parted with my cash!

I used turbo yeast(another sin I know!) to make 21l of wash. I left the wash for 7 days after it stopped bubbling, followed all the instructions and put some through the smartstill. Added vodka essence after filtering, left for a week and tried it last night. Looked okay but there was a distinct smell/taste of yeast. Should I run it all back through or will the taste always be there? Can anyone help

Hi

Doubt you will get rid of the yeast taste with that set-up. Though you will probably improve it by running it through a second, and even a third time. Dilute it each time to below 40%.

You can improve things a lot by making a much cleaner ferment. White sugar, bakers yeast, a little citric acid, and plain tomato paste should do it.

And don't waste another cent on 'vodka essence'. Vodka is technically just ethanol and water. Vodka essence is, well, a fraud.

If you are serious about making vodka, you will need a proper reflux column, and a decent boiler, among other things. There are no shortcuts.

Thanks for info

Essence is now in the bin!!

Looks like I'm going to have to do a bit more research, and start another wash without the turbo.

One more question, I have some cider I made that went wrong and is a bit vinegary, is it worth distilling?
