Really low volume

So the first time I did a distilling run I burned some of my wash in my boiler (tried a grain mash, didn't filter good, ran too hot), so after spending hours scrubbing out my boiler, I was pretty gunshy about my heat (propane burner). I'm trying to do my first batch of Uncle Jessi's, and detuned my still to use in pot still mode then started a stripping run. I collected distillate at a steady drip as I didn't want to burn anything, but my temperature fluctuated up and down 6 or 8 degrees C all the way through the collection. I stopped collecting when the temperature reached ~ 98. I didn't have a glass or copper cylinder that could hold the distillate in to check the proof, so I went by taste/smell. I could really tell when tails started coming through, however, my volume of distillate was pathetic. I only got about a liter total of 60% abv spirits out of a 20L wash. I broke my specific gravity measuring device while making the wash, so I don't know what the initial and final specific gravity of my wash was, but I followed the recipe and the bubbling had stopped for 24 hours when I collected and ran the wash. Did I stop too soon for a stripping run? I'm guessing my wash must have stuck and I thought it was done when it wasn't, but it seems like it should have been at least close in 5 days at ~ 76 F.
