Hello all, I am new to this. I have built a vm reflux still and ran it for the first time, with no results. The temp gauge at the take off never got to 79 degrees C. Should I reduce the flow of water to the top condenser or am I way off?

if that is the case, the liklihood is that you didn't apply enough power for long enough. what are your power inputs, and time trying?

I'm using a propane burner, and i ran it for 2 hours. My still is 3 inch stainless 5' long with vm head attached. It runs fine without the vm head attached. I spent a lot of time building this, I'm puzzled as to why it dosen't work. I have seen others here with the exact same setup that works. I have followed directions to a T. This is not my first attempt at distilling, just my first at trying to make a neutral spirit. Oh, my top condenser stops right at the top of the take off arm. Maybe increase the distance? Should I really increase the flame on the burner? I am using the same flame as before. (How do you post an image?)

Water flow is not the problem... It sounds like you aren't pushing enough heat... As the reflux condenser knocks down the rising vapor it should force some of it to redirect into the take off branch... A good rule of thumb would be to have the bottom of the condenser at least one column diameter above the take off branch... Also make sure your packing isn't too tight...

Thanks rad1470 and kiwi ! I am going to try moving my top condenser up, I'm sure I am pushing enough heat. Thank you everyone for your input. I will post some pics of my still after the holidays.
