Hey, folks. On Sunday, I'm heading to San Fransisco for a couple of weeks for a theatre festival. Any recommendations of fun (and preferrably kind of cheap) things to do in my off time?

there's a ton to do in the Bay Area for cheap/free that's fun. What kinds of things are you looking for? I lived there for 6 years. For starters: Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury, bleacher seats for a Giants or A's game, crazy place called the Exploratorium, China Town, North Beach (Italian neighborhood, great food), Fisherman's Warf (too touristy for me). You can get to many many places by Muni (elec trains), buses, BART (fast trains going out of city to the rest of the Bay Area), and walking. Public transit is cheap, safe and clean.

Tell me what you're looking to do and I can be more specific. One of my favorite cities.

Eat at Sam Woo's in Chinatown good food and safe, around the corner is a place you can watch two old ladies make fortune cookies (they are best when hot). Lots to do so take good walking shoes. And don't forget your veggies, don't know how they do it but the salads over there are great.

If you are into wine Sonoma County is only about an hour north of SF, lots of free wine tasting and beautiful country!

head down to the mission district one eve and have some great central or south american food! guatamalan, salvadoran, mexican, columbian, etc. etc., it's all there.

and the Mission has some of the best no frills burrito joints around. $3-4 (in 1995 $) for a brick-sized burrito, meats grilled and chopped in front of you, great salsas, tortillas, mmmm.

Thanks for the tip on the redwoods. Went to Muir Woods one day...it was the most amazing thing I think I've ever seen. And thanks for the other tips. Spent most of my time just wandering around and taking in the sights, the neighborhoods, etc. Man, what a beautiful city.
