Removing Denatonium from Methylated Spirits

Post by cessna »

I am new to distillation, I am just doing some research. I would like to build my own still when I find a bit of spare time this winter (southern hemisphere) I am thinking about splashing out and buying a still, but anyway this forum is great for a beginner like me.

This may sound strange but I thought I would ask anyway. Here in New Zealand, methylated spirits (as of 2-3 years ago) only contains ethanol and denatonium benzoate. I was wondering if there was anyway of removing the denatonium from the meths? Could you put meths through a still to extract ethanol?

Sure would be an easy way of making spirits if it's possible.

Thanks,
cessna

Dunno what you're talking about but the melting point is 160C. I found that a single run through a pot still left out most of the denatonium. Also, denatonium has rings and adsorbs very well to activated carbon.

I assume the spirits aren't methylated? the methanol is harder to remove.

This is a SERIOUS safety issue.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER attempt to 'remove' denatures from methylated / denatured spirits, and then trying to make it drinkable. It will make you very sick, OR KILL you (or your friends).

This is a non-discussion topic. It is deadly, and will certainly destroy any chance of home distillation being looked at in good light by the authorities.
