Caps of 1 gal jugs

I just finished to ruin 4 gal of heads and tails.

The 1 gal jugs come with metal caps which have a plastic inside.

Last run I collected heads and tails, was to lazy to go to the office to pic up new corks and just used the original caps.

The likker has a horrible smell and I hope that I can get it off using the Bok in high reflux or should I toss 'em?

I use glass preserving jars. They come with a while rubber sealing ring.
The first time I used them, I didn't remove the rubber ring.
I gave the jar a good shake every few days.

When I sampled the product it had the most putrid, bitter after taste you have ever tasted. It almost made me throw up.

I ran it through my pottie 4 times and then gave up and threw it out. The smell was better, but I just could not get that after taste out.

It may be a lot of effort for little return. If it is only a few litres, then I would say dump it.

It's amazing what alcohol will strip out of seals and corks etc. I learned early on. Glass, SS, copper and flour paste only.

Tossed it after a bokrun.

Smelled less but enough to say brrrr.

Will use it in the restaurants kitchen for desinfection, making fondue or so.

I have the same caps, I popped out the plastic insert and cut some cork disks (1/8" thick) to replace them with. I haven't noticed any flavor carrying over to the product. But then again maybe I'm use to the flavor the cork adds???

Cork #14 fits perfect, bought 100 in 30 USD.

I put 'em in water over a night before use.

Couldn't neither find any bad taste from natural cork yet.

from my understanding some of the cork is contaminated with a fungicide .in wine they call this "corked"
it mite be in the cheaper cork products.

Congrats

Congrats to your 5000th post DH.

Those cork come from an amazone community, they don't spray chemicals, but sure it can happen that cork products are contamined in industrial productions.

The Highlander whisky (Glenfiddich Distillery) sold in EC had cork and some had a horrible cork taste, than they changed to valved plastic caps.

Paper makes a good gasket for caps, also. File folders are made from non-bleached, non-dyed paper, so these should be the best. Rip a little corner from a batch, and place it in a shot glass with your spirits, and if there's no off-taste in a few days, you're good to go!

Hi Joe...
Brown parcel paper worked for me with my Pot-Still likker. Thick and dry. As barney says, "Test it in a shot glass first".

Later....S

That sucks I figured that I would just store in pint or quart mason jars depending on the amount. Didn't think about the rubber seal, what is everyone else storing in? looked like from pictures alot were mason jars or likker bottles.

I had to replace the lid on my feints jar a while back because the vapors were dissolving the jar lid seal... The contents were used as alcohol stove fuel rather than redistilling, just to be on the safe side of chance...

I flip my mason jar lids so's the rubber gasket is outside. Some seal tightly anyhow, some need a paper gasket. I've forgotten a few times, and never had off-flavors, so it would appear that not all mason jar lids are the same, and some don't dissolve in alky, but why chance it? Go flip 'em..
