Hi There and thanks for all your help in advance. This forum has really been a great resource getting me started with distilling.
OK, I've had a bunch of runs so far with various types of mashes and spirits over the past five months. I've been working with the water heater reflux still that I built form the directions in Ian Smiley's book. I'm running UJSM now as it's easy and i can just keep producing. Anyway, I just ran my second collection of low wines and added the feints from my first full spirit run. I had about 8 gallons of low wines and 2.5 gallons of mostly heads and some tails. My first 10 gallon batch of low wines produced a bunch of feints, and about a half gallon of nice hearts from about 65-80% ABV. So I just ran my second spirit run with everything and got 13 800ml jars of heads, 3 jars of hearts and about a gallon of tails. It seems to me that everything i put in from my first run, just came back out. When i ran this batch, the temp stayed consistent for a few hours as it produced 94% hooch, and then dropped almost linearly through the rest of the process. I was collecting about 50ml/minute the whole way through.
So, what am I doing wrong? How can I use my heads to get a better yield? FWIW - I'm thrilled with the quality of the product I get, I just figure it's not efficient. If I can't use my heads to get more middle, do they count as vodka? drinkable?
thanks so much,
A
