yeah, you'll find that if you don't fit into their little system, they have no idea what is going on (I'm sure there are exceptions though, and I know some are real gurus on the beer side of things). Best to just state your needs plainly, don't elaborate on the why, smile and leave. It's not really their fault, they're just retailers, they can only retain what the industry provides.

Went into a homebrew shop on the weekend and had to bite my tongue as the sales assistant extolled the virtues of turbo yeast and charcoal filtering to a customer
Just bought my airlocks and grommets and left

Looking at all the crap they sell it is good to realise that we don't need it.

Yep! I got the rude stare from my local too.

Went in to buy another couple of packs of wood chips and another airlock, then they started on about how I should try their turbo's that ferment in 24 hours... well I've already tried them and my DWWG ferments out quicker & the 24 hour turbo is all bullshit.

I told them that I can get everything I need from Woolies/Coles for half the price of a pkt of turbo & got the "well plenty have tried and failed speech" then was promptly ignored

If I hadnt found this forum I wouldnt know any different and would still be getting ripped off for booze that you cant give away, I love the DWWG & the Birdwatchers I've been doing, they ferment out perfectly and taste great straight out of the still.....

I guess the main thing I like about online shopping is that you don't have to put up with that hard sell crap. Nothing turns me off faster than hard sell. Online you browse, select what you want, and go to check out.

I love it when I go into a shop for a few small items and then get the " So..what are you making?" and I reply Chica or Corn beer.
Then they just kinda look crestfallen as it seems I have chosen to make something that is apparently "not adventurous enough" for the brewing world.

They serve a particular market and i bet almost everyone here started off making stuff from kits.

I know without my local brew shop i would have never got into any of this. I must admit he turns his noes up a bit at the idea of me making washed out of anything other than turbo yeast, but they have to make a living and probably honestly dont know any better.

You just need to look like you belong there and keep calm...to the point of being bored. You want to approach it with the same posture and mindset as going shopping for groceries. Works every time. My brewers think Im trying to reproduce a drink "Some type of corn beer I had in Mexico but I cant remember what it was called...but it was damn good."
If you act guilty or shifty they will notice and that notice builds up over time.

I guess I'm lucky. My local brew supply place is run by a young couple who cover both wine, beer, etc. They aren't pushy or nosy, don't try to sell you stuff you don't need, but are glad to answer any questions you might have or help you find you what you are looking for. They charge a dollar/two more for things cause they are on such a small scale, but its a small price to pay for the convenience. I mostly go in, do my business in cash and get out (as per goose). I usually know what I'm looking for to start with. But, when I do need help, they are very helpful and not nosy. So, thus far, its been handy. But, I also make beer, so I'm buying more specific beer related stuff too.

There is no better crossover supplement to our hobby than beer making.

I figured out what tipped off my brew shop guy. I went in and bought 15 packs of EC1118 and 1 case of bottles. He gave me the "raised eyebrow" look with the half-smile. Either he figured out what I was doing or had an eye out for me.
