Distilling twice
I am using a pot still.
An old timer told me to distill my wash once, remove the heads and tails, dilute the final product with tap water and redistill, pushing it (drawing water after the alcohol) till the desired dilution is obtained.
How does that sound?
2) I looked like a fool enough with my attempts to show you my still and I don't want to try again.
But I really would like your comments on this, coud someone send me an e-mail address so I can send it (I know I can ) and you try to post it?
Thanks,
C.

Re: Distilling twice new [re: cartouche]
Suggested method for runnin' a pot still:
First time through the still is a "strippin' run"... fast and dirty... collect everythin' (heads, body, tails... everythin') till ya get an hydrometer readin' of 10% abv or less.
Second time through the still is done slower with less heat. Collect and discard heads. Width of the cuts for the body based on taste/smell and recepie. Tails (and foreshots, if ya believe in that sort of thing) save to add to the next same batch, or save tails of any sort of batch for a tails only vodka run (I use a 5 gal carboy for this purpose).
The first run through the still is just to remove most of the water. The second run is where to make the cuts 'cause you'll get better seperation in the second run that the first. Don't add water to the second run... the higher the potency the better the separation.
I wish ya luck.
Water, taken in moderation, cannot hurt anybody.

Dont dilute unless your elements will be exposed.

Re: Distilling twice new [re: cartouche]
if you have a good fractionating or reflux column, one run will do just fine. or, you can cut any cooling to the column and use your still pretty much like a pot-still. run your low wines (stripping run) fast, but don't do it _too_ fast. you'll get this nifty floating blue nastiness in the distillate. knowing how fast is too fast is part of the art and takes practice.
It was the whisky talkin', not me.
