Regional searches on Craigslist. You could always buy a keg of the cheapest shitty beer out there and eat the deposit.

A lot of folks miss the obvious. There are always a few suppliers that repair, re-spear and re-brand kegs for the main breweries, Yes they can be dificult to find BUT they will often sell you a few kegs.

I recently bought a 30 litre and a 100 litre keg. Not cheap but a good alternative.

Sometimes the local bars get a couple of kegs of a new brand. Does'nt sell well, so they dont get anymore of the beer opting for a more popular brand. The empty kegs stay with the bar, usually in the way. Thats how I got mine, went to the owner of the bar and asked him if he had any old empty kegs, told him I would pay for it, he just told me to take them out of the way...

Worth a try, tell him its to make a been tun, or for storing plant feed for the garden. Round here, they would'nt even guess what it was for...
Got a 2 x 50L. Just ask, they can only say no... Just dont tell them what its really for...

Hope this helps man... :D :D :D

I think sometimes new distillers get stuck on kegs when all you really need is a stainless steel container. 15 and 17 gallon s/s barrels or drums make fantastic boilers, are about the same price as kegs, and are far easier to find than kegs most some areas. I love my 17 gallon ss drum and would never trade it for a keg, no how no way.

My boiler was once a swimming pool filter. It's all SS, has a 1-1/2" pipe fitting at each end, the top is completely removable and seals perfectly, and holds about 12 gallons. What more could a fella ask for? Completely legal, too.

God kills a kitten every time a keg gets stolen.

Check the scrap yard, It may not be a totally legit way to get a keg but if it's going to the chipper anyway...

I've never felt like buying a keg at the scrap yard was in any way wrong. The scrapyard I go to knows me as a welder who picks up all kind of stainless pieces. They charge me by the pound for stainless... flat bars, junked sinks and kitchen countertops, square tubing, kegs, cornies, round stock, what ever they have... aluminum and galvanized stuff too...

saw some stainless barrels in there one day... but they had already crushed them into a cube... They are there to be recyclers and make a living at the same time. They are doing a valuable service...They are putting a lot of boys to work that damn sure need the job too.

Kegs are common the world over... Just start looking around. You'll find one somewhere...

Ask a local pub what they pay for bond on there keg's (normally less than you or I would pay) and offer to pay them that for a keg.
No loss to them as they get there money back all the same.

No loss to them, but a big loss to the brewey that owns the keg - deposit doesn't cover purchase. Not on a high horse or saying don't do that (it's how I got my first keg), but don't do it thinking you aren't hurting anyones business, because you are. Best to be aware of such things, even if you still do it. And FFS, don't do that to some poor-ass micro brewer that needs his money to buy food.

If you can, track down what the brewery does with their damaged kegs they are taking out of circulation, you can probably pick them up cheap. Or scrappies, yeah.

Good luck!

Start with your local brew shop and tell them you are looking for a larger keg for long term storage and ask them if they know of anyone who reconditions kegs. I dealt with a guy in CA, who would sell me a 50 L for 50 US plus shipping.

Surely there must be an agent that sells kegs to the breweries near you.

There is big business in re-branding and reconditioning kegs for the breweries. I bought my pristine kegs from just such an agent. Sure the breweries won't sell you a keg - but their suppliers will. They probably wont mind selling you a keg or two, and the prices here are cheaper for a brand new keg than for a stock pot the same size.

Just for example I used these folks: http://www.morrow-brothers.co.uk/

There will likely be an equivalent source in your area.

just go to your local beer store and buy some returns for the deposit. $30.00 each or so and your off. I have bought tons of them like that .I just tell them Im using them for wine fermenters. I used to buy them 10 at a time. They make great bbq grills to sell to the college kids too..

thats how i did my 2nd one,,, and soon to be my 3rd one.... but for my first one,, i needed one in a hurry,, so i bought some beer and kept the keg. hate to say it, but i dont feel a bit bad. i know that it dident cost 100 + dollars to make the beer that filled the keg,,, and i know that theyve probabally made 1000+ dollars on on the same keg. and BTY, i would never take advantage of an elderly lady, but when only big businesses with big dollars are the only ones "allowed" to have fun, i could give 2 shits less about them.
good lord,,, did i just say that???????

Just looked up SS trade prices. About $2-$3 per pound. Empty keg weighs 30 lbs.

This will give you an idea if you feel like you are stealing or not. Just compare your purchase price to the current SS prices. In the end it really comes down if you feel like you did something wrong or not.

I personally like to get mine in the most unsavory way possible. Like trade them for small children or heroin. Sometimes I will wave my normal hitman fee and except an empty keg shell in its place.

You all are sinners. :ewink:

I understand what you all are thinking, and what you mean. But it dont look a bit good for our cause to be theivin kegs from the brewery. Hell. If Stillin became legal, think of how many kegs they would be missin if everyone had that idea.

to me , it aint theavin.. i paid (the same price) for what has been paid for time and time again. seems like my first keg was about 130$$$.
thats about 30 bucks (or less for the beer) and 100 for the keg. given the current ss prices, thats pretty good... plus like iv said, this keg has been paid for time and time again.. furthermore, in the eyes of the law, our cause is illegal,,, not a 1/4 illegal,, not 1/2 illegal,,, but (in most cases 100% illegal.) BUT,,, if stillin became legal, theyd sell em for 20 dollars less that if they was full of beer. just another way to F**k ya. i dont mean any disrespect to ya MUle,,, but guess im just ole fasion,,,, i guess that there aint nothing wrong with getting rich, but dont get rich off of only me.

Well, they could just up the deposits to have them better represent the value of the shell. Not like people are 'stealing' them, just not returning them and forfeiting the deposit. That sounds kinda funny. Reminds me of office space "... that is not yours right? Yes but it becomes ours"
