Whats Your Favourite Parts of Our Hobby...

After answering a few very diverse topics here on HD, it got me wondering what other stillers liked most about our hobby...
Apart from making your own clean, cheap booze...
Was it making a new still or coming up with the next great recipe...? Was it the theory or chemistry that intriged you..?

I'd love to know what the top three are...

I get great satisfaction from drinking my hooch after all the time and effort put in to it.

My next challenge is bourbon.

Other - Gin. Gin is awesome. Choosing, gathering, grinding up my botanicals in a mortar and tasting the different components coming out of the condenser, one at a time. My favourite part by a long shot.

I can't claim to have ever made cheap likker...

The bourbon challenge is probably my favorite part of stilling. I haven't run anything for some time now... work and life pushed the hobby to the back burner... but I did spend a couple of years pursuing good homemade bourbon. I loved every aspect of it... soldering copper to grinding grains to filling small barrels with water to seal them up... and getting all those great smells and tastes along the way. There were more that a few sessions with guitars, mandolins and homemade whiskey and friends sitting around the campfire too... Whats not to love?

Stilling and doing everything leading up to getting the final product is great fun don't get me wrong. The best part in my opinion is the sittin around an ol' campfire with friends passing the jar around telling stories. Ahh can't wait for it to get cold.

If the choice was available, I'd vote for just plain learning and developing new skills, in all aspects of the hobby.

I'm better with a bottle torch for having built a still. Have much more knowledge of how a particular liquor is made, even if I haven't made that variety yet. Understand a lot more about basic chemistry than I used to, etc.

Of course, drinking pretty high quality booze for less than 2 bucks a bottle doesn't hurt and that choice IS available

First the theory, buildin and practise. Now it's all about what I drink. It ain't bought an it ain't cheap.

I enjoy it all to be honest, trying new recipes from here is always good but I have to agree with Snook. Sitting around a real fire with good friends sharing tales and hooch

I love it all, but I picked my top three. Right now Im toying with the idea for a bubble plate.

I'm the 1 that voted for Legalization. I'm not sayin its really my favorite in terms of enjoyment.. I mean, talkin to a bunch of politicians is never a good time when you could be sitting out back sippin a lil homemade goodness.. but, I truly think now is the time. If cali can legalize weed, surely the rest of us should be able to do a little stillin' at home.
