Offset column?

I'm still thinking about adding a column. It would a lot easier if the column wasn't mounted on the still lid. Is there any reason why a bench mounted column with a 25cm section of pipe to connect it to the pot still wouldn't work? All I can think of is that there might be too much heat loss and it would fill up with condensate.
