ok,, this might sound kinda dumb,,, but here it goes.. the last time i was stillin, it was outside,, dry,,, and cool, so i had favorite wool garments on. as i reached up to touch the column (for whatever reason) there was an arc of static electricity from my finger to the column. SNAP!!!!!!! THAT SHIT HURT!!!! but could it have hurt alot more???????? if there was vapor leaks, could this have been a bad day??? any thoughts???

There would need to be one hell of a vapor leak. Like those guys at the gas pump that set off a huge fire from a static spark. There is hella vapors floatin around there. That being said, you can never be to careful. I have mixed and made some bad ass explosives. (another stupid hobby), While shaking/mixing chemicals you need to be grounded so you dont make that spark. If it bothers you, ground yourself.

I'm leaning towards wool not being the best thing to be wearing if you want to avoid static discharge... You'll either need to determine a combination of still-safe clothing or become
The Nude Distiller... And, no, for the second option we don't need pictures...

Agreed, the vapors would be so strong that you would not be able to breathe. Upper and lower explosion limits 19% vol in air and 3% vol in air. I don't think you would want to breathe if the air had that much ethanol in it.
On a side, sorry to derail, but I too was into explosives in my youth. I made pounds of flash powder for fire crackers, made rockets, cannons, mortars, shells, all kinds of illegal firework type stuff. Fun hobby. A friend of my father (whom I learned from) was once filling a garbage bag full of oxy-acetylene mix and it went off in his face due to static discharge, so that stuff can happen. He was wearing a face shield and ear muffs and was not injured at all but was still pretty scary. Biggest boom I made was filled a 6 foot weather balloon full of oxy-acetylene. Both the fill and the ignition was on a timer so we were no where near it. Got that on video somewhere. End of digression. Sorry.

Yes it was a very fun hobby. Feds have made it very hard to obtain any ingrediants that give you the quality fireworks you are looking for.

You and I my friend could have some interesting conversations

And yes, Oxyacetaline make a big boom
Keep it real

Just go barefoot. Doesn't even need to be both feet, one foot at a time will work.
No Bull.
