Temperature control while fermenting

Post by Bushman »

I thought I would throw out my ideas about controlling the temperature during fermenting. I usually ferment inside but at night our house temp is usually cooler. To activate the yeast I have been reading several articles. In the birdwatchers tried and true recipe it is suggested to put a drop light in a Styrofoam box around your fermenting container. I read that a drop light could cause problems with too much light concentration on one area. Another alternative is a ferm wrap (about $39.00) to wrap around the carboy. I also read about using a heat source that is used in fish tanks to keep them warm for reptiles. The article said they run about $15.00 and will heat the area about 5-10 degrees above ambient temps. This would easily make up for the drop in temp at night in my home. Another idea I had was to wrap the carboy with the heat wiring used to wrap pipes in the winter to keep them from freezing. Has anyone tried any of these ideas or do you have one's I haven't thought of?
