3 bourbon choices please

Post by LWTCS »

My dad wants to get his boss a decent middle of the road bourbon.

I am hopeful I can get a recommendation as I don't make or drink.

what kind of money are ya lookin to spend? You can get a good bottle of buffalo trace for around $20, that is a good value. If you want to go for something really good, Blanton's single barrel will run you around $50, but it is the best commercial bourbon i have had yet. If you want something with more kick, baker's 107 is pretty good, at 107 proof, about $40

Right on. I like the buffalo trace alot better than makers mark, and its also about 5-6$ cheaper. I guess the more you spend doesnt always mean yer gettin a better product. I tried Woodford Reserve the other night for the first time. I didnt like it. It tasted more like scotch than bourbon to me. Im not much for scotch. That stuff was $35. Luckily it didnt come out of my pocket. :D

He saw the pricing and seems like Buffalo Trace it is.

Recon he don't like the new boss that much to burn a 50.

Buffalo Trace is good. Another in that price range is Corner Creek...which I find well balanced.

Corner creek is a good choice, black maple hill is good also but a little more expensive, knob creek is or woodford reserve are both pretty good for the price.

BT is good for the price, but Four Roses Single Barrel is a cut better, and they give out the mash bill for all their products. The new Makers 46 barrel stave infused is another cut higher, also very good @ $30. Moving up to Van Winkle 13yo Family Reserve Rye is a bargain still, under $40.

Get him a middle of the road bourbon and that's where you'll be, stuck in the middle of the road. Life is too short to drink bad whiskey.

Pappy Van Winkle, I believe it is the 15 year, usually goes for around $60.00. It only comes out once a year and goes pretty quick, tasty stuff at 107 proof.
My every day go to though is Elijah Craig 12 year, cheesy bottle, good bourbon, for around $25.00. You know, the kind you don't cringe with when
somebody asks to have it mixed with Coke. :esad:

I'm with Woodford Reserve but I need to taste Buffalo Trace as it seems to get a good rap from a lot of people.

I tried Knob Creek for the first time last night and was surprised how hot on the tongue and nose it was. I thought it was good but it surprised me. Is this the heads or rye in the mash bill?

Went to a lounge last night and had me a Woodford, neat. It was served in a great big wide snifter glass which I think the mixologist warmed up a bit 8) I thought it was good, but there was a certain smell and taste that was a little soapy, antiseptic, medicinal or fuel like. Couldn't put my finger on it, but it was definitely present. Not bad, just interesting. I'll have to have a couple more just to figure it out

I know exactly what you are talking about. I had me a drink of the woodford at christmas time. It is a bourbon, but I thought it had a bit of a scotch taste, possibly a bit peaty. Deffinately the most odd tasting bourbon i have had.

Hey rc22, do you notice that "peaty" or "fuel-y" smell Mule and me pick up with Woodford?

Ya...it's on the spicy side. Not sure if its the rye or heads. Probably a little bit of both :). I had some new Knob creek barrel strength (about 120 proof). It was hotter than hell and felt like swallowing a hot coal.
Bookers is much smoother and less hot at 127 proof.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. It smelled "hot" and the taste on the tongue had a fire to it. I was just curious, since I haven't used any rye to date, if that was always from making wide cuts into the heads or if the mash bill affected that.
