Stripping run is it needed?

I have a VM still and have never done a stripping run before. In the birdwatchers recipe they say to do a stripping run. I read several strands here on stripping and it says to strip until you reach 20% abv. My question what is the advantage of a stripping run other than maybe getting it a little cleaner for the reflux run? Also I realize I need to take the packing out for a stripping run but do I still run the liebig and condenser wide open?
