Stupidity...

Hi, I just saw this video on youtube and I just couldn't believe it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LplnDNcpjas

For making fuel it would be ok but from the stash of bottles behind the still it does look like he is making shine. Plastic boiler, plastic tubing, plastic funnel and last but not least he stores the stuff in plastic bottles! How can someone go to so much trouble and not find out that alcohol is a solvent and that he will be leaching carcinogen into his body(and probably his friends)? I can now see why some of you old dogs get so pissed with newbies!

Seen it a while ago BT... He's somewhere here in Scotland judging by the accent. Gotta be sellin with all them bottles in his stash...

@ all you new guy's out there...

No Plastics, No Silicons and don't sell without a permit to do so. This HOBBY, will be forever tarnished by those who flaunt the rules giving the excise-men another reason to come down hard on those artizans putting time and study into producing a nice beverage for themselves.

It's just not worth the hassle... YOU WILL GET CAUGHT AT SOME POINT...

Thanks BanjoTed... :D

He's a Scott who has been in NZ for 20 years. (It's in the comment part of one of his videos.)

BanjoTed, I saw that video when it first appeared on YouTube... I thought back then that it was the poster child for not using plastic in a still... But, believe it or not, those PVC stills, or whatever they are made of (I can't remember for sure) are actually produced and sold commercially... There is a topic here in the forums about this rig...

It's blatantly obvious that this guy is bottling for sale as I highly doubt he drinks all that nor merely gives it away...

Everything this guy is doing, don't do...!!! :|

EDIT:

Found it... This is called a Duplast and it is actually listed on the parent site on the Photos of Stills Sold Commercially page...

The duplast looks to be an anomaly, probably from when distilling was legalized in NZ. Can't find a supplier just lots of people trying to sell'em. What would happen if distilling was legal???

Another plastic still from NZ:
http://www.stillspirits.com/webfiles/St ... ctions.pdf

It says the boiler is made of Polypropylene:
Wikipedia: In 2008, researchers in Canada asserted that quaternary ammonium biocides and oleamide were leaking out of certain polypropylene labware, affecting experimental results.[22] Since polypropylene is used in a wide number of food containers such as those for yogurt, Health Canada media spokesman Paul Duchesne, said the department will be reviewing the findings to determine whether steps are needed to protect consumers.

What I meant by that was, If it was legalized.. that would be great, we all agree. But can you imagine all the cheap imported crap that would start appearing from unscrupulous sources...

We'd need some legal framework to stop these dangerous products and undoing all the good work of this community...

I agree man, but atm its an international problem... Bought a bottle of Glenlivet a while back while I was in Germany... After 1 shot I realised I wasn't drinking the much appraised highland malt from Scotland, but an inferior copy from India... Took it back to the shop for a refund and only after I mentioned Germany's trading standards, was given my money back...

The single malt could have came from anywhere, the fact being, that it just cannot be policed at that level...
Rules can still be put in place, but even if our hobby was legalised, one of those rules would be not to sell unless permitted to do so...

I'm still apprehensive to give a free bottle as a prezzie even to family, they could just let it slip not even knowing they've just dobbed me in... :(
:D :D :D

I like to stay under the radar....

Even though he was using plastics and selling, I do like the radiator idea for cooling water, this would work good for heating he garage in winter up here above the 45th parallel.
