Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Rookie, out of ideas

Post by deepseajb »

I have a sugar wash that started a little over 1.080 I believe. It has been working for almost a month. 10 days or so ago I checked it and it was only down to 1.060, with very little activity. So I checked the temp first, it was quite low at 68 deg F.
I installed an aquarium heater and brought the temp up to 88 deg F . This had little to no affect on the activity. Since this was the first wash I had tried without DAP, I added more corn flakes cereal which I have used in the past in conjunction with the DAP successfully. Thinking I must need more nutrient . still not much help. I then went on to find fertilizer grade DAP 18/46/0 , added some of that along with some EC 1118 a more tolerant yeast being I originaly used bakers yeast. This time I decided to add every thing I had ever heard could be used as a nutrient, a pinch or two epsom salts, multivitamin, and viola we got some pretty good action for 3 days or so, dropped the s.g to 1.052 and it has stalled again. I have agitated it with a drill and paint mixer several times a day and just cant seem to get it going. This is the first wash I have ever had stick and it is quite frustrating. The taste is not sweet but definitely not dry by any means. I have noticed on this package of corn flakes it has BHT added to packaging to preserve freshness. Could that be my troubles, if so would racking it possibly help. Would making a giant starter batch of ec 1118 possibly get it going. Or cut my losses and run it the way it is knowing it still has another 5% potential or so. The flat spot on my forehead is telling me to admit defeat, :( but it is so incredibly hard to do, any help is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance, I'M STUMPED.
