Someone to come along and write a home distillers book on rum. (Ian Smiley) Apparently there are 101 ways to make rum and I am fixing to do #102. I have finally filled three barrels with whiskey and am turning my attention to rum. I'm waiting, I'm waiting.

Why are you waiting? Rum is one of the most simple distillates to make. After doing all those grain mashes and making whiskey, rum washes will be a piece of cake for you.

Ok, so while Rockey is waiting for the next great publication:
Assuming an initial wash made from 1.2 galon molassis and 4lbs brown and 10lbs white sugar at 19% aproximate abv is run through a potstill for the low wines.
For the spirit run:
How deep into the tails would you rummsters collect ?
Is this desireable for flavor as in whiskey ?
Is putting the tails in the next batch of spirit run common ?
My wash has a scent of licorace from the backstrap molassis.
I've run sugar wash for neutral spirit, but this is my first molassis wash.
I think it will be done in another few days.

I collect down to 40-50% depending on taste/smell. The tails is where most of the flavour is just like in whiskey. I usually recycle heads and tails in the stripping run. I haven't used blackstrap so I don't know about the licorace smell.
Good luck with it I'm sure it will turn out well for you.
