SS vs Copper column

Post by exon »

I would like opinions on the possible difference between using a stainless steel tube for a distillation column as opposed to copper.

Copper is pricey...
Stainless tube, in 2" to 4" might be far less expensive, and serve as well, maybe better?

I'm considering a Bokabob column with the VM takeoff mod in LM/VM style.

My intent would be to use internal components, (packing), and upper parts, (everything above the basic column riser), made of copper, both for heat dissipation and cooling, reflux, and reaction with the vapor for sulfite removal.

Would an insulated stainless steel column equalize as well internally, or quicker than a copper column, and NOT transfer heat of the kettle upwards to the take-off section?

Is there some source of stainless tube that would be of suitable composition for this use?
...(I don't think common SS muffler pipe is of specific composition that it could be used, but I just don't know...)

Thank you
