I did my first AG mash on the weekend. As a long time AG beer brewer, the barley and wheat parts where fine, but I have a question about the corn.
I initially tried to use my immersion element to cook the corn, but it turned out not so good.
As I was pressed for time, I then just mashed my new feed corn (which is quite finely crushed) along with the other 11.5kg of grain for 90 mins. I imagine I did not get a lot of sugar out of the corn, but I was happy with 1.077 at 43L.. about 9%. I did add some sugar to boost it a bit.
My question is, what is the potential gravity of 1Kg of corn in 1L of water? (apologies to you imperial measurement folks).

Re: Corn potential conversion
On the main site there is a lot of information about grains, including where someone has worked out ppg to pkgL. 2.2# of grain in 1L (.946 quart) seems way to high to me. Keeping the gain/water ratio somewhere close to the widely used max of 2#/gal, would put you in the 1kg per 4L of water range using metric units.
I'm no expert on AG washes so maybe some will post here.

Re: Corn potential conversion
I would thank that is impossible, the corn/maze will soak that much up.
I just use 1lb (1/2 kg) per 1 gallon (4l)= 3 abv.this comes our pretty close.
not exsact but works fingering in your head.
so 1 kg per 1 l would be 24abv of course this is impossible.

Re: Corn potential conversion
A decent yield would be about 230 points-kg/liter, similar to barley numbers. That is about 28 ppg.
I would have expected about 1.062 for your mash from the corn alone.
I use steam injection to bring the corn to a boil to prevent scorching.
Cheers,

It's better to learn from other people's mistakes than your own.
Re: Corn potential conversion
OK I ran this on a calculator.. field corn/maze
1 KG per 1 L 80% efficiency....
OG-1.225
FG-1.056
22.5% alcohol

Re: Corn potential conversion
Thanks guys.
I knew I would get bugger all from the corn as I just mashed it (not boiled it).
Good to know that properly treated, it yields about the same as barley.
Cheers.
(should have added, I only used 4kg of corn)
