ran out of propane

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

ran out of propane

Post by outdoorsmadness »

love this site, i learned alot but aint there yet. i built a cm still and after running a vineager run and an alcohol cleaning run i decided to convert it into a vm. i have a 2 inch collum 40 inches high 12 inch collum above that with a double wrap coil with a cold finger. take off arm is 1 and half with a 1 inch gate valve. liebig is 23 inches long. after building i ran another vinager run and used my cleaning feints after that. then for my first real run i used birdwatchers recipie, 6 gal.i let it equliberum for about an 1 and a half at full reflux then cracked gate vale open and took off at 1 drip per second untill i coolected 50 ml. then i re equliberum for 30 more min and took off heads at same rate untill temp reached 172 in takeoff arm. collected about 650 ml. when i started taking my hearts i open gate valve till i was gatting almost a small stream, the temp would flucuate between 172.9 to 171.3.( is this because i dont have my collum insulated?) then later flutuating between 176 to 174 and similar temps throughout run. when it got to be about 177.1 i ran out of propane. i collected a little more than a quart and a half of 92% but i know there was more to go. whole process took about 6 hrs would it be alright to let it sit for a couple of days then run again real fast to get the rest to add to my feints or should i toss. airing out my spirits now cant wait to cut and drink. :P
