New Guy Reporting In (FNG)

Post by LLave »

New guy here, just saying hello.
This is a fantastic site! I have been reading like crazy for the last couple days. My primary interest is in the crafting Bourbon. Any helpful links pertaining to Bourbon specifically would be awesome.

Thanks guys,

Welcome to the forum, if you have been reading like crazy then you have already discovered the type of still to build and the recipes for making them! Good luck and if you have specific questions feel free to ask :D

Hey Llave - good luck in your Bourbon quest. I found Ian Smiley's book 'Making Corn Whiskey' very helpful reading for my whiskey pursuits in addition to the information on this site. Cheers!

I'd start with the Tried and True Recipes. NCHooch makes a good bourbon recipe, give it a go, and tell us how it works for ya :D

What kind of setup are you using?

Thanks for the response.

I checked out NCHooch's recipe and it sounds great. That is what I want to do! As far as set up, i am still trying to figure out what to build. I am starting from scratch. I have plenty of design and fabrication experience, but no experience building a still. I am thinking of a pretty basic pot still. Any suggestions?

Have you looked at the parent site? There's a good amount of info on there about pot stills :egeek: I recommend reading the entire thing, even with running a pot still, it's always a good reference. I'd start with that recipe, and invest in a 20L/5gal Stainless Steel pot or keg at the very least, and a minimum ID copper tubing about 1/2"in. (12.7mm) for your condenser.
Don't go just with my opinion, get several :D For some ideas and such I'd check out the Pot Distillation and Design. There's loads of people that are willing to help you with your new hobby, but from my experience, try to refrain asking questions that have already been answered on here, people will tend to get a little angry. :eugeek:
If you are ever stumped, read, read, read, then ask, then put it into practice. :)
Best of luck to you mate

I have been reading like crazy. There are so many variations, it is hard to determine what is best. I am really excited to get started. I have much to acquire. Container for fermentation, jars, bottles, oak, still, on and on.

Greeting Llave, and welcome to the obsession.

Since January 1 2011 there have been 1805 new members join this forum. I'm telling you that to tell you this. It's really important that you do your homework and use the accumulated knowledge that's already here, rather than ask for generic, basic, suggestions.

Almost every questions a FNG ( :) ) has, has been asked and answered dozens of times.

It's not a problem to help someone that's done some research with a specific question, but it's important that new members demonstrate that they've put forth some effort to figure out their own answers.

This is kind of a generic answer, and I hope other newbies read this and get a sense of the tempo of this forum.

Read, educate, ask when stuck.

Well put Bull. Like I said, I have been reading like crazy, there is TONS of knowledge contained in this forum, more than enough to get started, more than enough to get completely lost
