Are you serious? You will probably die from cancer before you blow yourself up. You do not have to hover over your still to watch it. Standing 10' away to have a cigarette shouldn't be harmful in the way you are thinking. OK, I am not judging but really there is no reason you need to stand that close to the still to watch it stand back and enjoy your cigarette.

I quit smoking about 18months ago after sixty years    but before that I would be smoking within a few feet of my still. Never ever occured to me that it could be dangerous, besides it isn't a naked flame. I've seen blokes flick cigarette butts into a pan of petrol with no drama, but I was much, much younger then and was invincible.

I doubt that there is a skerrick of danger apart from reduced lung capacity but ...

Stay Safe

I wouldn't worry to much about it. Seeing how many use open flame to heat their stills.

not allowed to show a cigarette on telly until after the watershed.

s'not 'politically correct' whatever that means.

Seems that the most dangerous thing you mentioned would be letting someone else watch your still 5% of the time... They might drink the foreshots or disable the wrong thing in a failure or start an invisible fire unknowingly.. Now I'm remembering my friend sticking his finger in the top of a perfect NY Cheesecake I baked last week (Yeah I make cheesecakes, whats it to you). He tried to remedy the flaw he created by smearing it with a paper towel.. End result was an ugly delicious cheesecake. Point being is people often f*** shit up even worse when they don't know what they're doing. Im not trying to attack you by any means, it sounds like you're better about staying by your still than 99% of noobs.

Its not the alcohol that is the risk, its the vapours. If the mixture with air becomes concentrated and the day is warm then the flashpoint will be fairly low. Smoke outside the barn with the door or window open so you have a view of the still should be safe, but keep a good distance and the wind in your face. Be safe, be happy!

Fuel Flash point Autoignition temperature
Ethanol (70%) 16.6 °C (61.88 °F) 363 °C (685.40 °F)
Gasoline (petrol) -43 °C (-45 °F) 246 °C (495 °F)
Diesel >62 °C (143 °F) 210 °C (410 °F)

SORRY ABOUT THE FORMATTING - SEE:

This reminds me of the time my cigarette decided to ash itself while I was standing just over my mash. I didn't bother with it, just kept stirring :D

I smoke while tending my still.
