Multi core liebig
Well folks I thought you might like to think about this. The usual route for more capacity is to increase the size of your liebig and to install a turbulator. You need to do that as the distance to a cold surface gets too big and efficiency drops off.
You really are better off with a long condenser with a smaller inner. But it SUCKS and is as inconvenient as well something really inconvenient
So go for that plan but chop the core into 3 or 5 sections and put them in a common outer jacket.
Reduces the length for convenience. Oh and just for the hell of it wrap it into a spiral too.
More to follow

Holy moly! Nice Myles. Real nice. What sizes are they? And how did you get the bigger stuff coiled? That would be cool for my pot still.

Re: Multi core liebig
I believe you have to put the smaller tubes inside while they are straight and bend them all at the same time, nice job myles!
Re: Multi core liebig
Well I supose you could do that but I didn't. I just wrapped the coils on the same core and combined them afterwards. I wish it was a simple as that but it wasn't. I learned on the job as it wereBushman wrote:I believe you have to put the smaller tubes inside while they are straight and bend them all at the same time, nice job myles!
Size wise the 3 inners are each 10mm (just over 3/8") and the outer is 1". I didn't coil the outer, I got it for free and just cleaned it. The spacers will be taken out later, they were left over from a previous job but aid in keeping it rigid during assembly.
Total length will be about 7 foot and it is going on my column. I know its overkill but it will look good, and if I ever upgrade the boiler it will cope with any power input that I am likely to use.
I have the construction method sussed now just need to get the ends on and try it out.

Is there no end to what you blokes will do????? Can't wait to hear how the bugger works.
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)

I was inspired by "The Twisted Bitch" from duds2u http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... =16&t=7865
Someone may have done the multi core liebig before but I don't remember seeing it.
It will be under this still head

You could call it the Bucketless Worm Shotgun.
I really do like it. I think I will be making something similar for my pot still.

Re: Multi core liebig
Here you go folks, next stage of the story.
The outer really is 1" but the rest is metric, so the inners are actually 10mm and the fittings are 22mm and 28mm. This is a brass manifold for underfloor heating. It is a female 22mm end cap with a thick drilled base, and they come with 2, 3 or 4 holes to take 6, 8 or 10mm tube.
Now it will just fit into 28mm tube so it passes through a 28mm fitting with ease. Solder in a length of 22mm tube, file out the endstops from a 22-28mm reducer, slide that onto the 22mm tube and push the lot into the 28mm fitting.
Do the same with the other end with a longer bit of 22mm tube and you get this.
Need to fit the reducers and hose connectors to the T's and leak test. I think that she has potential.
Edit: need to shorten the top 22mm tube abd fit some bends to connect up to the VM valve.

Re: Multi core liebig
I am building for stress relief at the moment. Re modelling the house and looking for a new job, as this one ends in a few months.
When all the copper work is done I will be re-doing the still room to accomodate the 3 main stills, and this might end up on the new glycol double boiler. I have too many condensers now, so can afford to play 'mix and match' to see what works best on which still.

Damn Myles
Do you do boiler work? Very nice, some good looking copper work

Re: Multi core liebig
The simple answer is yes. Unfortunately I am so snowed under with other life stuff at the moment I have not even finished my own new boiler yet. I tend to favour riveted and soldered seams and / or welsh seams. Sort of like this:bentstick wrote:Damn Myles

WOW !
Great looking stuff Myles. I am still starring at the picture of your still head trying to figure out what I am looking at ?? Creative !!
I love the coiled Liebig and the concept of it winding around the column. I cant wait to see it assembled. Can I steal that idea?
Put some fancy valve handles on that rig! You know we love the fancy stuff.
Keep it up!!

Re: Multi core liebig
The head is a VM with an offset heads column, and a heads trap on a horizontal coil. It has the option for batch dumping the heads and it could be run as an LM if you wanted, and possibly a few other modes if you really wanted.mash rookie wrote:WOW !

In hindsight (on the column) there could be issues with pooling, partially due to the shallow slope angles but mainly because I didn't want to try and put a 90 degree bend in the inners. For this reason whilst this would be fine on a pot still, it might not actually work too well on the column.
A multi core straight liebig on the other hand would be just fine.
When I refurbish the still room there will be 3 main stills in there, so this will probably find a home on the glycol double boiler.

I have decided. I am going to call you, "Willy Wonka, The Mad Scientist"
I cant wait to se her done with the coiled condensor wrapped around like a girl in a sexy dress. Pictures W.W.M.S!
My imagination is running wild.
I can see where we are going now. Crazy, fun, beautiful designs that make great stuff!!!! It a whole new world out there now Willy!
Form? function? form? function? Let the creativity begin.... oop's , I mean continue.

Re: Multi core liebig
I just ran the numbers through both the condenser calculator and through the surface area calculator. They both work out within a gnats whisker of each other.
Relative to your standard liebig of 22mm in 28mm (that is 3/4" in 1" equivalent), by switching your inner to 3 10mm cores you should get a 35% increase in cooling capacity.
