Just got back from a little spur of the moment holiday in Mexico! (long plane ride if you are from uk ) had a good time, thought I'd tell ya a little about it.
Anyway, it was cloudy and drizzled for three full days while we were there, I must of dragged some of the British weather over there with me. When it rains for that long and you have travelled roughly 48,000 miles expecting to spend most of the time swimming in the sea and playing beach volley ball you quite quickly get bored! So by day three I had read all the literature I had taken with me and finished off all the levels of the ridiculous iPhone game "plants vs zombies". so... exasperated I went to the bar at midday and started looking through the spirits menu and found an extensive list of Rums and whiskys which I decided to work my way through on this rainy afternoon. ( It was all inclusive or "free" as I saw it and it was raining so why not right?)
I have not bought any commercial spirit at home since I got my first still a couple of years ago and when I go out I drink beer almost exclusively so I was interested to try some of these Spirits neat and see how they compare to my own offerings.
WOW! my rum destroys these things! Iv been making rum for about 6 months now and thought my rum was very drinkable but sorta average since the only thing I have compared it to is a couple of bottles of super top shelf carribean Rums from my dads house that he bought on a cruise last year ($60+ per bottle cockspur reserve and Havana club barrel proof). These expensive Rums taste similar to mine but the oaky, vanilla, sweet aroma coming out of the glass blows my offerings away.... For now at least.
I tried appletons especial - chemical/plastic taste
Bacardi white - heads
Bacardi anejo - almost no flavor or aroma
Matusalem - can't remember what I thought of this one...don't remember it being good but maybe I was starting to feel a little under the weather by this time of my sampling afternoon...
I had no idea how good my product was getting! I'm proud of myself suddenly

While away I also sampled many a tequila
Here is some advice for anyone visiting Mexico... Always ask for the good tequila!!! Our hotel stocked about a dozen different tequila bottles of varying quality. The best white that they had was smooth and peppery and nice in a shot, I even bought a bottle! However, on the last night in the disco I was given a couple of shots of something that tasted a little like tequila and a lot like heads from a vm run! I didn't get terribly drunk that night but suffered all the next day with the worst hangover I have had in years! God damned cheap ass bar man letting me put that junk in my mouth...

Anyways, apart from being offered cocaine a few times more that i would generally like it was a beautiful place and I would recommend it to anyone

Absolutely agree! I just didn't realize I was actually doing a good job with it!
Used to be a £9 bottle of white rum or vodka was a good, tasty weekend treat to take to parties. Now I know better...

mexico dont yall get the news in the UK? LOL there are PLENTy of places here in the states thats just like mexico (ie. georiga). all the mexican culture youll ever want here,,,,,,,WITHOUT the decapitations and mass graves.

i always said that i would love to go to mexico,, even retire there. but now its on my places to visit list right beside packastan.

The Mexican Riviera's not bad. Never felt threatened there, and considering the grinding poverty everywhere in Mexico, the people were decent.

all the mexicans here (georgia) that ive met are normal, decient people. the problem with mexico isnt the general population, its the GOVERNMENT,, and i think we can all agree to that. maby one day things will change and mexico can once again be a safe place to visit or live. until then,,,, you wont find MY gringo ass there.

The hotel/resort was very safe and very friendly and I would go back. But outside there seemed to be alot of drugs, policemen standing next to signs warning tourists to be vigilant and not drink too much because you might get abducted and any shop or store that sold anything of value had at least one security guard that was armed to the teeth (first time iv ever seen an Uzi in real life )

according to an article in this mornings newspaper. carnival cruise line subsidary, princess cruises has discontinued mexican ports of call poerto vallarta,mazatlan, cabo san lucas, and ensenada, citing passenger safety. for no longer visiting these ports.

on an op related note i purchased a mini bottle of makers mark recently just for a taste. i will probably use the remaining 45 ml. to clean something besides my insides. cob

I agree with the makers mark thing, I also tried that on my holiday binge! My rum at 65% in the aging jar is smoother than that junk!
However that kind of whisky has it's appeal tastewise. I might give it a go at some point...
