Welcome from Brisbane

Post by fields »

Hello All,

Just a first post to say hello and thankyou for this resource.

I have been lurking for some time in the distilling world.

I have a 5L still spirits super reflux still that I bought about 5 years ago and have used it to make a fair amount of neutral, but got sick of the small size and many runs necessary and the off taste that my turbo yeasts were annoying me.

After coming across a cheap 25L still in the trading post... not sure of the brand but is the same size boiler as the still spirits with some sort of tallish stainless CM head on it I bought it to make the runs less time consuming as was cheaper than buying a new boiler.

Have just fired up some brews (each with a turbo maxed out the amount of sugar in each)

Came across this site in the effort to work out how to eliminate the funny turbo taste and have learnt a lot... am keen to try a ujsm and wspow as before that apart from a full whiskey or fruit brandy I was not even aware of the possibilities of what I could be brewing and the negative attitude there is to turbos (obviously I'd only spoken to people in home brew stores and that is all they know)

Am thinking of selling both my stills and making my own with a keg boiler but have no idea where to start as I don't have any metalworking experience and don't know where to go to buy things that don't cost a fortune.

Am hoping that I can use the site (have done much reading already) and ask questions when I'm stuck

So... Hi Everyone

welcome fields,
your 25 litre would work well - doing stripping runs, then combine for a spirit run.
check to see if theres some copper mesh packed in the column, if not chuck some in there.
if making a (copper?) still plumbing stores can sell you lengths by the metre. kegs with 2200 watt
elements work well, even better with heat controller. bakers yeast is good, i use lowans brand
from local supermarket. 280 gram pack for about $4. happy stillin.. :)
i luv makin booz.

Thanks for the welcome - I read the compleat distiller and want to make a vm still potentially with a cross flow condenser head with a valve to the head so i can shut it off and use as a pot still only, am still not sure the role of the temperature controller... i have seen some code for arduino (which i've built other stuff in) but am not sure why you need it

I have 1m of 2.5 in copper and a big roll of airconditiong copper and a length of 1 in... need to work out a good source of connectors (any plumbing stores or sources that sell them cheap?)

Depending on where you are in Brisbane, B P Plumbing Supplies at Northgate have been very good to me when I went to buy copper pipes and fittings from them. They are very helpful and also quite cheap! The guy there gave me discounts on all my parts when I went there, which was about a year ago. They are at 249 Toombul Road, Northgate. They had everything I needed bar a needle valve which I got from a Hydraulics supply shop nearby. Also CraftBrewer have alot of fittings that may be of use as well, they are on the southside but have a website you can order from http://www.craftbrewer.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
