Only 49% ABV??

Post by TheGinz »

I just check my distillate with a proof and tarille alcoholmeter and adjusting for temperature I a getting just 49% abv.

This is using Uncle Jesse's corn mash recipe. I made three mashes and distilled each mash once. I put all the distillate together (heads and tails minus foreshots) and then distilled it all two more times. The last time I seperated heads and tails as best I could and got a total of about 1.4 gallons (5.39 liters). I just checked the abv with my new alcoholmeter and I am getting just 55% abv. That don't sound right. I should be getting somewheres around 80% at least, if not more.

I am using a still spirits still in potstill mode. Should I be using it in reflux mode? Do I have too much tail in there? I'll admit I didn't use an alcoholmeter to check for tails, just my inexperienced nose. Should I run another three mashes to get purer stuff?

Please help.
