my first coil built

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

my first coil built

Post by wolfpak382usa »

well, i decided to try and build my first coil today, here's what i came up with.
i used...
1- 10" piece of 3/4" copper for the coldfinger
2- 3/4" caps for the ends of the coldfinger
1- 10 foot piece of 1/4" soft copper from lowes
oatley lead free silver solder (lowes)
nokorode lead free flux (lowes)

I guess it turned out ok for my first attempt, other than i need more practice with the soldering.(it don't leak though and i guess that's all that matters). It did turn out a little bigger than what i had intended. the coils measure about 8" and the overall measurement with the coldfinger is about 10" but the diameter is a little big, about 2 1/4". I really wanted to get it a little smaller with the intentions of building a boka in the next few days and using this coil in a 2" copper pipe but don't think it's gonna fit.(may have to go 3"...lol). I tried to bend it on a smaller pipe but it kept wanting to crimp on me. Oh well, if i can't use it , it was a good learning experience. Thanks for all the good info on this site also, couldn't have done it with out you guys.

well here it is, please let me know what ya'll think and tell me if there's any thing wrong as far as you can tell from the pic..thanks.

looks pretty solid with not to much flattening. i say good job. the key for me to a tight coil was patience. it took me a few hours to do mine for my 2"er
