Junior Johnson's Moonshine

Post by jimsbrotherjack »

Holy Jesus... Decided to try some commercial "moonshine". Barf... Barf... Barf... I've done corn whiskey and it tastes nothing like the triple distilled crap sold in stores. Junior Johnson's stuff tastes like turpentine smells. I will NEVER buy commercial again!

+1... Haven't tasted JJM's beverage, but I am having a hard time trying to find something that comes close to my 18MO UJ - All-Grain...

Seems the more your practice this hobby, the better it gets...

Iv'e had Jr's stuff. It is distilled to an inch of it's life and filtered....it tastes more like a slightly sweet vodka. I personally didn't find the taste (what little there was) objectionable as it is a similar flavor that I'm used to from the SEast. There just wasn't very much of it left...so it had a more "vodka"/alc like vibe to it. Different schools...ie., distill to as high a proof as you can (clean) and then water it down to make a very light tasting drink. VS distilling closer or at drinking proof which has a thicker mouthfeel and taste. (like corn grappa). Different strokes for different folks. I've had good (and bad) examples of both.

I just found that it tasted more like burning and less like smooth. Was just disappointed... Waiting to see what Popcorn Sutton's recipe will taste like. Need to wait til it goes into wider distribution. Not available up here in the Northeast.

I thought you said you were never going to buy commercial again?
While you are waiting to find out exactly what species of cynical garbage the Popcorn Sutton drink is going to be, maybe you should start trying out some good commercial whiskeys, so you can have something against which to measure your own good whiskey?
Good Luck!

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
