Oak Solutions

Post by Big J »

Came across this website and thought you guys might find it useful:

They focus on oak for wine but of course the products could be used for our purposes as well. They sell all over the world, I'm going to buy some items from them here in South Africa next week. Quantities are kind of large, but the lady I spoke to here says they have 'sample packs' that you can buy to try the different products out.

They've got an interesting little 'oak calculator' here:

Not sure how accurate it is considering our products are much higher ABV than wine, but is interesting none the less.

Cheers,

Oak

Why?
I thought S.Africa was a wine producing country. I would find out where they get their barrels and get the real thing. Even a used wine barrel can be recharred and used. You will always be better off using the real thing rather than some substitute, unless you are in jail and have to use what you can get your hands on.

Its more of a money thing. There's plenty of barrels here, but all the barrels I have found are quite expensive. I'll look into used recharred barrels though. Do you have any experience using those barrels?

barrels

Not used wine barrels, but I have used, used whiskey barrels. If you can get a used wine barrel, order a barrel cleaning kit, use it. Then fill it with whiskey, you will be ok. Might take a tad longer but they will work.
